A man has taken a guilty plea to charges of assault leading to serious bodily injury of a fellow cruise ship guest last year. The incident occurred on October 20, 2023, when the Carnival Magic was sailing off the coast of Nantucket on a Canada/New England voyage.
According to court documents, Truman was loud and disruptive during a theater performance. He was asked to stop twice by a fellow audience member but refused. When the passenger went to seek help from a member of the crew, he was attacked by Truman.
Theater Incident Caused Serious Bodily Injury
Truman plunged a cocktail glass into the victim’s face; he then struck him several times. It caused significant cuts that required stitches. During the investigation, Truman claimed he was acting in self-defense. Federal charges were filed in December 2023.
Although he pleaded guilty, Truman could face up to 10 years in prison. He is due to be sentenced on August 29. Following the alleged attack, Truman was confined to his stateroom for the remainder of the voyage and then banned for life by Carnival.
Guest Banned for Life
The FBI and police began investigating when the ship returned to Norfolk, VA. Carnival said it fully cooperated with the investigation. “We have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior, and the assailant guest has been permanently banned from sailing on Carnival in the future,” the cruise line said.
