Being around lots of people may be something you enjoy, but there’s always a risk that your belongings may get stolen through theft or even pick-pocketing.

From ensuring your valuables to locking them up safely, here are the eight easiest ways to protect your belongings on a crowded cruise ship.

Take Copies of Your Essential Documents

A passport in a black bag with a cruise line ticket.

You rarely need to carry your original documents around with you on a cruise ship. Wherever possible, make copies of your documents and keep them instead. Losing your originals is much worse than having copies stolen, so opt for copies and keep your originals at home.

Yes, some thieves are after your information, but having your originals safely tucked away will protect you in identity theft cases.

Make Sure You Have Adequate Insurance on Your Valuables

A person is writing the words "travel insurance" on a piece of paper.

Did you know that if you have renters insurance your personal belongings are even covered from theft while you’re abroad?

This cover isn’t just limited to the property you’re renting but often extends to all your valuables when you travel. Take out a renters insurance policy that includes your jewelry, devices, and other valuables while you travel.

Stay Observant When in Public

Carnival Liberty Toppings Bar

Public places like restaurants, casinos, and shops will often be the most crowded while you enjoy your cruise. You need to be more diligent about who’s around you. Take note of people who are standing too close to you or even those who “accidentally” bump into you.

Pickpockets use distractive tactics to take your attention off your pockets or bags, so if you’re carrying around valuables, invest in a lockable bag that’s difficult to penetrate. If your wallet is in your pocket, keep your hands close to it to avoid being snatched.

Opt for a Ship Safe Facility for Easy Lockup

Speak to your cruise director about paying a little extra for a safe. Lock your items in the safe, especially those you don’t need to carry around. Also, avoid carrying items around when you don’t need to. This includes devices and expensive jewelry & watches.

If it can be locked up, use the ship’s facilities to keep your expensive items safe so that you can enjoy your vacation without being concerned about thieves.

Leave Valuables in Your Cabin

Sun Princess SUite

Your cabin will be a lockable area where you can easily leave valuable items. Yes, the ship’s staff will clean your cabin regularly, which can put your items at risk. However, most cruise ship theft takes place in an open view in a way that is usually not noticeable.

If possible, leave your valuable items in your cabin when walking through the ship and lock them in a cabin safe.

Tag Certain Items with Tracking

luggage duffle pixabay

RFID tracking allows you to tag some items you simply cannot afford to have stolen. These items can subsequently be tracked if they get lost or stolen.

Research RFID tracking and add this safety measure to your devices and credit cards so that you’re not stuck on a ship with no way to pay for your amenities. This is one sure way to prevent theft and also a great way to catch thieves if they have targeted you somehow.

Keep Your Valuables Out of Sight

As proud as you might be about that new iPhone or those gold earrings, this is no time to show off. Making others aware of your nice items may tempt fate.

Thieves are always looking for valuable items to steal, which are easy to sell for quick cash. Consider what you take on your cruise vacation and leave those valuable items at home if possible.

Work as a Team

Chances are you’re not going on this cruise alone. Work with your companions, friends, and/or family to look after each other. Consider assigning one person to be the designated lookout to keep valuables safe while others are swimming, gambling, or enjoying ship amenities.

If everyone you’re with is aware that theft is a real risk to avoid, thieves will feel less lucky when they consider targeting your group.

Final Thoughts

You want to have fun on your cruise without worrying about losing your stuff. But crowded places like cruise ships tend to be hotbeds for pickpockets and phishing scams, so be careful.

Also, remember that your information is valuable, so if you’re in a Wi-Fi hotspot, keep your devices up to date with the latest security software or VPN to ensure all aspects of your vacation are secure.

What to Expect When Cruising During Hurricane Season https://cruiseradio.net/everything-you-need-to-know-about-hurricane-season-cruises/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 19:05:10 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=134687 Cruising during hurricane season can be risky but also cheaper and less crowded. It’s important to take precautions for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Cruising during hurricane season requires careful consideration of geographical factors. Since areas like the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are more prone to hurricanes, it’s important to research your destination and choose a flexible cruise line for unexpected weather events.

What is Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season is the time of the year when tropical storms and hurricanes are most likely to occur because of mild weather.

The North Atlantic Hurricane Season

In the Atlantic, hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the season’s peak occurring in August and September.

During this period, the Atlantic Ocean is warm enough to fuel the formation of tropical storms and hurricanes. In the peak of hurricane season, the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico water can be as warm as 90 degrees.

The Atlantic hurricane season typically produces 12 named storms, six of which become hurricanes and three of which become major hurricanes. Recently, it was reported that NOAA expects the hurricane season to be more active than normal.

The number and intensity of storms can vary yearly, depending on factors such as ocean temperatures, wind patterns, and atmospheric conditions.

Ten hurricanes formed during the 2023 Atlantic Season, and 20 were given names.

When planning a cruise during hurricane season, it is essential to keep an eye on the weather and to be prepared for the possibility of itinerary changes or cancellations. Cruise lines have contingency plans for dealing with storms, but it is always a good idea to have travel insurance and be flexible with your plans.

Understanding hurricane season and the risks associated with cruising during this time can help you make informed decisions and stay safe while enjoying your vacation.

If you plan to cruise during hurricane season, it’s essential to monitor the weather forecasts before and during your trip. Cruise lines have established procedures for dealing with adverse weather conditions, and they typically monitor the weather closely to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew.

When booking a cruise during hurricane season, purchasing travel insurance that covers trip cancellations and interruptions due to weather-related issues is also a good idea. Some cruise lines may also offer its own insurance policies that provide additional coverage.

If a hurricane is forecasted to affect your itinerary, the cruise line will typically make necessary changes to the route to avoid the storm. This may include changing ports of call, altering the duration of the trip, or canceling the cruise altogether.

Suppose a hurricane is expected to impact your vacation directly. In that case, the cruise line directly will likely email you before embarkation day with details about the trip or ports of call changes.

Cruising during hurricane season can be an exciting adventure, but being well-prepared and aware of the risks is essential. By keeping an eye on the weather forecasts, purchasing travel insurance, and understanding the procedures of the cruise line, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise vacation.

Geographical Considerations

The Caribbean is a popular destination for cruises, but it is also one of the areas most impacted by hurricanes. The hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June to November, with the peak season being from August to October.

When planning a Caribbean cruise during hurricane season, choose your itinerary carefully. Some areas of the Caribbean are more prone to hurricanes than others, and it is important to avoid these areas during hurricane season.

Western Caribbean cruises, which typically include destinations such as Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel, are more likely to be affected by hurricanes than Eastern Caribbean cruises, which usually include destinations such as St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico.

It is also important to note that storms can affect other areas of the Caribbean, such as the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), the Bahamas, and Bermuda.

Safety Measures and Precautions

When cruising during hurricane season, safety is always the top priority. Fortunately, cruise ships are equipped with advanced technology and highly trained crews to ensure the safety of all onboard.

One of the most critical safety measures is the captain’s decision-making process. Captains are trained to monitor weather conditions and make informed decisions about the ship’s route and itinerary. For example, if a hurricane is predicted to be in the ship’s path, the captain may alter the course or cancel the trip.

Cruise ships also have advanced safety technology, including radar, sonar, and satellite communication systems. These tools enable the crew to monitor weather conditions and communicate with other ships and emergency services if necessary.

Cruise ships have extensive emergency procedures in place in the event of an emergency. All passengers must participate in a safety drill at the beginning of the trip, which includes instructions on evacuating the ship in an emergency. Crew members are also trained to handle various emergencies, from medical emergencies to fires and floods.

Passengers can take additional precautions to ensure their safety during hurricane season. It is recommended that they pack a basic emergency kit, including a flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit. They should also stay informed about weather conditions and follow the captain’s instructions.

The Benefits of Cruising During Hurricane Season

Before we go one step further, it’s important to note that planning a cruise during hurricane season can be a gamble. It also comes with several risks, which we’ll discuss in the next section. But definite pluses make this a time of year worth considering.

For one thing, the latter part of the hurricane season falls when most kids are back in school. You still have the tail-end of summer, meaning cruising out of ports like New York City in still-gorgeous weather but with fewer families.

Given that many clans try to fit four or five people into a stateroom, the fewer families on any sailing, the lower the overall number of people aboard. And that means more room for you.

Impact on Itineraries

Cruising during hurricane season can significantly impact itineraries, causing port stops, missed ports, and ship rerouting changes. It is essential for passengers to understand the potential itinerary changes that may occur due to hurricanes and to be prepared for such changes.

Possible Itinerary Changes

Nassau cruise port activities
Nassau, Bahamas

Cruise lines have established procedures to monitor weather conditions and make necessary itinerary changes to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. If a hurricane is forecasted to impact a port of call, the cruise line may cancel the port stop and replace it with an alternative port.

In some cases, the ship may need to reroute to avoid the hurricane entirely, resulting in a change of itinerary. These changes may occur before embarkation day or while sailing on your cruise.

Missed Ports and Rerouting

Cruise lines typically offer compensation in the form of onboard credit or a refund of the port fees in case of a missed port. Passengers may also participate in an alternative activity onboard the ship. If the ship needs to reroute, the cruise line will typically provide updates and keep passengers informed of any changes to the itinerary.

Passengers must understand that itinerary changes can occur anytime during the cruise, even after the ship departs from its home port. Passengers should remain flexible and be prepared for potential changes to their itinerary due to hurricanes.

How to Deal with Delays and Cancellations

When cruising during hurricane season, it’s essential to know that delays and cancellations are possible. The safety of passengers and crew is the top priority, and cruise lines will take necessary precautions to avoid any potential danger.

If a storm or hurricane is approaching, the cruise line may alter the itinerary or even cancel the cruise altogether. In this case, passengers will typically be notified as soon as possible and given the option to reschedule or receive a refund.

It’s important to note that cruise lines are not responsible for any additional costs incurred due to delayed or canceled cruises, such as flights or hotels. Passengers should always purchase travel insurance to cover any unexpected expenses.

In the event of a missed port due to weather conditions, the cruise line will typically offer compensation. This may include a refund of port fees or a credit towards a future cruise.

It’s important to review the cruise contract and reservation details carefully to understand the policies and procedures in case of delays or cancellations. By being prepared and informed, passengers can confidently navigate any unexpected situations.

It’s a good idea to print out the Ticket Contract before you accept the terms and conditions for your cruise.

Travel Insurance and Compensation

Cruise Line Policy vs. regular travel insurance
Comparing a cruise line policy to third-party travel insurance for a 40-year-old male.

Cruising during hurricane season can be risky, and travelers are often concerned about what will happen if their cruise is canceled or delayed due to weather conditions. Fortunately, many cruise lines offer insurance and compensation options to protect travelers from unexpected events.

Travel insurance is one of the most important things to consider when booking a cruise during hurricane season.

A person is writing the words "travel insurance" on a piece of paper.

Travel insurance can cover various issues, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost or stolen luggage. In case of a cruise cancellation due to weather or other reasons, most cruise lines offer a full refund or rescheduling option.

However, outside costs of the cruise, such as non-refundable hotel rooms or airfare with hefty change fees and booked tours or shore excursions outside of the cruise line, are not covered.

Buying insurance during hurricane season is important, and it should be done promptly.

Why? Two reasons.

travel insurance globe

First, if you want a policy with a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) clause (which we highly recommend), it must be purchased within two weeks of the initial deposit.

Secondly, to make any hurricane-related claim, the policy has to have been purchased before the storm is named.

In other words, you cannot wait until the last minute to learn about the hurricane, buy an insurance policy, and attempt to file a claim.

It’s essential to carefully read the cruise line’s ticket contract and the travel insurance policy’s explanation of benefits before agreeing to the terms and conditions.

Some cruise lines may also offer compensation for inconveniences caused by weather-related delays or cancellations, such as additional hotel stays or transportation costs. It’s important to check with the cruise line to see what compensation options are available.

Port taxes and fees are another consideration when booking a cruise during hurricane season. If a port is closed due to weather conditions, cruise lines may be required to refund these fees to travelers.

Travelers should also watch for special offers and lower prices for cruising during hurricane season. While booking a cruise at a lower price may be tempting, it’s important to consider the potential risks and understand the cruise line’s cancellation policy.

Hurricane Season

Cruising during hurricane season can be daunting, but it can still be a great vacation with the proper preparation and attitude.

Here are some tips to help you navigate the potential challenges of cruising during hurricane season:

1. Choose Your Destination Wisely

When planning a cruise during hurricane season, choosing your destination wisely is important. Some areas are more prone to hurricanes than others, so do your research and select a destination that is less likely to be affected.

For example, cruises to Alaska or Europe are less likely to be impacted by hurricanes than cruises to the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico.

2. Be Prepared for Seasickness

north atlantic rough weather

The seas can be rough during hurricane season, so preparing for seasickness on a cruise is important. Bring any necessary medication or remedies, such as ginger or motion sickness bands, and consider booking a cabin in the middle of the ship, where the motion is less noticeable.

3. Have the Right Attitude

When cruising during hurricane season, having the right attitude is essential. Understand that the weather is out of your control and that the ship’s crew is doing everything possible to keep you safe. Stay positive and enjoy the other aspects of your cruise, such as the onboard activities and entertainment.

4. Have a Backup Plan for Travel

Be flexible. If a hurricane does impact your cruise, it’s essential to have a backup plan for travel.

Purchase travel insurance covering weather-related cancellations and delays, and have a plan for alternate travel arrangements, such as flights or hotels.

Following these tips and being prepared, you can still enjoy a fantastic cruise during hurricane season.

As it approaches its 20th anniversary, it continues to attract more than a million cruisers annually. But what sets this destination apart and makes it so appealing to cruise passengers? Let’s dive in.

Grand Turk Cruise Port History

Built in 2006 by Carnival Corporation, the $50 million cruise center is located on the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, meaning they are under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.

The Grand Turk Cruise Center encompasses 14 acres and features a two-berth pier, port complex, bars, a pool, retail, a shore excursion hub, on-site attractions, and gorgeous white-sand beaches.

The beaches are just a short walk from the cruise center, allowing visitors to swim, sunbathe, and relax in the warm Caribbean sun.

A wide range of water sports and activities, such as diving, parasailing, and floating obstacle courses, are available right off the ship. The island offers many options for guests to take an organized tour or explore independently.

A recent addition is a beach on the right side of the cruise pier when walking off the ship. This beach offers more shade and trees than the main beach, along with a bar, a beach shop, and facilities.

Cruise Lines That Visit Grand Turk

The Grand Turk Cruise Center is a popular destination for several major cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, which owns and operates the port. Carnival Cruise Line has a long history with Grand Turk, with the first ship docking at the port in 2006.

Since then, Carnival Cruise Line has brought millions of passengers to the Grand Turk, making it one of the most popular private cruising destinations.

Several cruise lines visit the Grand Turk Cruise Center:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Holland America Line
  • Princess Cruises
  • Marella Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean (at times when Labadee is closed to cruise ships)

Carnival Cruise Line operates several ships that regularly visit the Grand Turk Cruise Center, including the Carnival Venezia, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Horizon, Enchanted Princess, Carnival Freedom, ms Rotterdam, and Carnival Celebration

PRO TIP: Check out the Grand Turk port schedule to see how many ships are in port with you.

Grand Turk Cruise Center is situated on the island’s western side, just a short distance from the capital city of Cockburn Town, home to about 5,000 residents. This means that when a Carnival mega ship docks at Grand Turk, it easily doubles the island’s population.

The pier can accommodate up to two mega-ships at a time, making it a popular destination for cruise lines leaving from the East Coast. The pier was recently expanded to accommodate Carnival’s largest ships, including the 180,000-ton, 5,200-passenger Excel class.

Additionally, the terminal is easily accessible for visitors with disabilities, with ramps and other accommodations available to ensure equal access for all. Some locals can assist if a guest has mobility issues and can not walk down the long pier.

(NOTE: It is customary to offer a few dollars gratuity for assistance as the cruise line does not employ these individuals.)

Grand Turk Port Attractions and Facilities

A sunny outdoor plaza features a round blue fountain surrounded by palm trees. Several shops with white facades and red umbrellas are visible in the background.

One of the main attractions at the center is Margaritaville. This popular restaurant and bar offer a lively atmosphere with music, drinks, and food.

One standout for Grand Turk’s Margaritaville is a swim-up bar where guests can enjoy a cool, refreshing beverage without leaving the pool. Cabanas are available for those who want to relax in a more private setting.

The pool area at Margaritaville can sometimes be inappropriate for children due to alcohol and language, so be cautious.

Two public restrooms in the cruise port area are attended by janitorial staff who work hard to keep the facilities clean and tidy.

In addition to the pool at Margaritaville, there are two beaches at Grand Turk, the main beach off to the left side of the pier and a recently added second beach on the right side of the pier with shade trees at the main beach, beachside bar, ice cream, and retail shop.

For the adventurous, the FlowRider is a must-try. This simulated surfing experience suits all levels, from beginners to experts. This is the same experience found on Royal Caribbean ships but is less reliable than its shipboard counterpart as it is only sometimes operational.

There are also loungers for guests to relax and soak up the warm Caribbean.

Be mindful of sand fleas at the beach early in the morning and toward the end of the day; they didn’t seem as prevalent in the day’s heat.

Governor’s Beach is a little past the port, but it is not accessible unless you leave the port complex, as there is a cargo dock with no trespassing signage between the two beaches. Once you reach Jack’s Shack, you can only get a little further.

Poolside cabanas are available for those who want to relax in a more private setting. The cabanas can go fast depending on how many ships are in port (remember, two ships can dock there, adding up to a combined 10,000 visitors a day.

A small, white bungalow with a covered porch stands amidst lush greenery and tropical plants. The sky is clear and blue, with a few clouds visible.

As of late 2023, the cabanas are $399 for six hours and do not come with food or drinks, making the price steep. Cabana renters won’t have to go without nourishment as a dedicated server from Margaritaville is assigned to deliver food or drinks from the restaurant.

Starbucks at Grand Turk

For those who need their caffeine fix – even in the Caribbean – there’s an on-site Starbucks just outside the duty-free shop where guests debark the ship – it’s hard to miss as it’s a giant pink building albeit a little pricier than a typical U.S.-based Starbucks, the Grand Turk version offers various drinks. A large latte costs $8.

Note that the Grand Turk Starbucks does not accept the Starbucks app for payment – it is strictly cash or credit card. The credit card machine is hit or miss, so having cash as a backup wouldn’t hurt.

Outside of the Grand Turk Port Area

Grand Turk is a beautiful and scenic destination with lots to do outside of the port area, but remember that when you are off Carnival’s property, you are not under the eye of port security.

While Grand Turk is generally as safe as any other tourist destination, it’s always best to use common sense when traveling. Once guests are past the gates, vendors can approach them and try to offer them everything from trinkets to boat rides.

One caveat – beach chairs are available for rent outside the cruise port property. Many guests think that is part of the package, but fees are associated with umbrellas or other services, so be forewarned.

Pro Tip: When leaving the Grand Turk Cruise Center, always be mindful of your surroundings. If you encounter wild donkeys, avoid petting them as they are wild and may kick, causing injury.

Best Things to Do at Grand Turk

A person in a blue shirt stands near a green E-Z-GO golf cart. Several other golf carts are lined up in the background on a sunny day.

In addition to the beach, the Grand Turk Cruise Center offers visitors the opportunity to explore the island with organized tours onboard the ship.

Some popular tours are:

  • Island Golf Cart Tour
  • Diving Tour
  • Jeep Tours
  • Dune Buggy Adventure
  • Reef Snorkel
  • Duck Boat Adventure

The island has various historic sites and attractions, including the Grand Turk Lighthouse, a visit to the salt mines, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum.

Shore excursions are available through third-party vendors; however, because there isn’t a lot of competition on Grand Turk, prices for independent tour operators companies and the cruise line tend to align with one another. We noticed our golf cart tour was the same price booking it through the cruise line or through a third-party vendor.

Diving the Grand Turk Wall

The Grand Turk Wall, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Caribbean, is a massive underwater cliff that drops off 7,000 feet just off the coast of Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is one of the deepest walls in the world and is home to a diverse range of marine life, including sharks, rays, turtles, and colorful fish.

The Grand Turk Wall is a popular destination for cruise shore excursions because it offers a unique and exciting opportunity to experience the underwater world.

Snorkeling and diving tours are available, and visitors can get up close to the wall and see the incredible marine life that calls it home.

In some instances, a cruise-organized tour can be less expensive than Carnival’s Stingray excursion, which costs $89 per person – roughly $10 cheaper than those from independent tour operators.

The Turks and Caicos National Museum, located near the Grand Turk Cruise Center, offers visitors a chance to learn about the islands’ history. The museum has a collection of artifacts that tell the story of the islands’ history, including exhibits on the Lucayan Indians, the salt industry, and the wreck of the Molasses Reef.

A highlight is a replica of a traditional Caicos sloop used for fishing and transportation in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Shopping at Grand Turk Cruise Center

People walk and stand in a plaza with palm trees, buildings, and clear blue skies. Some carry bags and wear hats in a tropical setting.

Like most Caribbean destinations, Grand Turk Cruise Center offers a variety of retail stores. Remember, the island has nothing unique – think of spots like Diamonds International, Effy, etc.

Most retail shops are limited to the cruise port as the island is not developed for tourism besides the occasional grocery store, electronics shop, or bar.

One of the center’s most popular shops is the Ron Jon Surf Shop, which offers surf gear, beachwear, logo items, and accessories. Visitors can find everything they need for a day at the beach, including swimwear, towels, and sunscreen.

Cruisers sailing out of Port Canaveral might be tempted to pick up a Ron Jon shirt in Grand Turk and then go to the Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, located minutes from the Port Canaveral cruise terminal, to get one.

Margaritaville has a small gift shop with T-shirts, towels, magnets, and other trinkets with stand-alone kiosks and stands offering souvenirs and other items.

Dining Options

Grand Turk does offer its share of restaurants, but guests who plan on eating something ashore – whether it’s a full, sit-down meal or just a snack – can expect a pricey dining experience.

Generally speaking, island cuisine tends to be pricey because of the logistics of getting food from the mainland to the island as food and beverages arrive on cargo ships.

Here are a few notable places to eat:

Jack’s Shack in Grand Turk

Just a short walk from the cruise port, Jack’s Shack is a favorite among visitors. It offers a relaxing beachfront setting where diners can enjoy tasty Caribbean and American dishes with their toes in the sand.

Their jerk chicken and fresh seafood options are particularly popular. A jerk chicken combo and cocktail will set guests back about $30.

For those who don’t want to make the 10-minute walk to Jack’s Shack, a taxi ride costs about $7 each way. Note that the walk is not accessible for people with mobility issues.

Margaritaville at Grand Turk Cruise Port

Located steps from the Grand Turk Cruise Center, Margaritaville is convenient for cruise passengers. This chain restaurant offers a familiar menu with various burgers, salads, and its famous (and pricey) margaritas. It’s a fun, laid-back place to enjoy a meal, with a large pool, swim-up bar, a DJ, and a lounging area for guests to relax.

One can’t-miss is their signature margaritas. Just bring your wallet, as the “frozen concoctions that help you hang on” start at $18.

A fairly new addition to the Grand Turk cruise port is the Beached Whale Bar and Grill. This offers Caribbean eats and drinks, with open-air views and servers that will tend to you in the shade or on the beach. Having eaten at different venues within the cruise, this is by far the best choice. Great food with Margaritaville prices (this is a subsidiary of Margaritaville)!

Guests who are up for a short taxi ride or a stroll, venturing into downtown Grand Turk opens up more dining options with eateries that serve up traditional Turks and Caicos cuisine, allowing you to sample dishes like conch fritters, peas n’ rice, and other island specialties.

Grand Turk is Rooted in History and Space

Grand Turk Cruise Center is not only a popular tourist destination but also has historical significance dating back to the pre-Columbian era and has played a significant role in the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

One of the most notable events in Grand Turk’s history was the landing of astronaut John Glenn in 1962. Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth, and he made history when his space capsule splashed down right outside Grand Turk.

A display under a pavilion shows six figures in astronaut suits and accompanying text, with a graphic of Earth and a spacecraft projected on the ground below. Trees and the ocean are in the background.

Today, visitors can visit the landing site and see the replica capsule and monument commemorating this historic event. Grand Turk has also played a role in the history of navigation.

Aside from serving as an important stop for ships traveling between Europe and the Americas, Grand Turk was used as a base by the United States Navy during World War II. Today, visitors can explore the island’s historic lighthouse and view maps and other navigational tools used by sailors in the past.

Understanding Cruise Price Drops After Your Final Payment https://cruiseradio.net/cruise-price-drops-after-final-payment/ Sun, 02 Jun 2024 18:13:16 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=157603 Cruise price drops are a common concern, especially if they happen after paying for your trip. So what happens if your cruise price drops after you’ve already paid for it? Below are some helpful tips on maximizing the value of your cruise.

How Cruise Pricing Works

It’s important to remember that cruise pricing is dynamic and constantly changing based on supply and demand.

As a result, it is not uncommon for cruise lines to offer promotions or discounts to stimulate demand for a particular sailing or stateroom category.

This often leaves passengers wondering what happens if a cruise price drops after booking – and whether they are entitled to a refund or other compensation.

Passengers need to understand the reasons behind a price drop and whether it is likely to continue before deciding whether to pursue a refund or compensation claim.

Not all price drops result in a refund, and passengers should know the potential impact on their existing reservation when booking their cruise because it may be too late afterward.

Understanding Cruise Price Drops

Booking a cruise excites everyone – after all, you’re counting down the days before you go on vacation – but it can also be frustrating when prices drop after you’ve booked.

The price for a cruise is basic economics – when demand is high, prices tend to increase.

Cruise prices fluctuate for various reasons, including changes in demand and supply and external factors such as geopolitical events, natural disasters, and weather conditions. These changes can result in price drops, which may be temporary or permanent.

Conversely, when demand is low, prices tend to decrease. This means prices vary based on the season, itinerary, and cabin availability. In some cases, cruise lines may purposely price a voyage higher than usual to decrease demand for that sailing in the hope that consumers choose another one.

Importantly, cruise prices are not set in stone and may change multiple times before the sailing date. This means that if a lower price becomes available, you may be able to take advantage of the lower price, even after you’ve already booked.

You should monitor cruise fares regularly to take advantage of a cruise price drop.

Many cruise lines offer price protection guarantees, which means that if the price of a cruise drops after booking, the traveler can receive a refund for the difference.

But these guarantees often have restrictions and limitations, so reading the fine print is essential.

Impact of Cruise Price Drops on Existing Bookings

Celebrity Edge Return Trip Report
(DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

When cruise prices drop after booking, it can be frustrating for travelers who have already committed to paying a specific price. Cruise operators understand the potential impact of these price drops on existing bookings.

Firstly, not all cruise lines offer price protection or price adjustment policies—the price is the price, no matter what.

“Travelers should check with their travel agent or carefully review the terms and conditions of their ticket contract to determine if they are eligible,” travel agent Becky Smith told us.

For cruise lines that offer price protection – which essentially says that consumers are entitled to compensation or a refund in the event of a price change – travelers may be eligible for a refund or onboard credit if their cruise price drops before the final payment is due.

Further, travelers who have already made their final payment may not be eligible for any compensation if the price of their cruise drops.

Sometimes, it doesn’t warrant paying in full early if you can’t take advantage of a price drop. In this case, the traveler may take advantage of any promotions or discounts offered at the time of the price drop, but they will not receive a refund or onboard credit.

Policies on Cruise Price Drops

When prices drop, many consumers simply say, “I’ll cancel and rebook at the lower price.” But not so fast.

Depending on the terms and conditions of the original booking, canceling may result in penalties or fees that could outweigh any potential savings from rebooking at a lower price and are not worth the hassle of rebooking just to save a few dollars.

Cruise Policy Variations

(DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

Policies on price drops vary from one cruise line to another. Some cruise lines offer price protection programs that allow passengers to claim the difference as an onboard credit, while others may offer refunds or the option to rebook at a lower price.

Let’s take Carnival and Royal Caribbean, for example. Carnival Cruise Line offers a “Best Price Guarantee” program that allows passengers to claim the difference in price if they find a lower rate for the same cruise within 48 hours of booking.

Carnival also offers its Early Saver program that allows guests to claim price drops until the final payment date. After the final payment, adjustments can be made to recoup the difference in the form of an onboard credit.

Odyssey of the Seas (Photo courtesy of Broward County’s Port Everglades)

Royal Caribbean offers a similar program called “Price Protection,” which allows passengers to claim the difference in price up until 72 hours before the sailing date.

Becky Smith of Becky’s Travel Biz tells us that while these programs are quite popular and have saved consumers thousands of dollars, there is a caveat.

Smith says, “To take advantage of a price drop, the same category must be available to reprice a reservation, and it also must be available with the same occupancy for the booking.” So read the fine print carefully.

On the other hand, some cruise lines, particularly more upscale or all-inclusive lines – do not offer any price protection programs. If the price drops after booking, passengers who book with these companies are not eligible for refunds or credits.

Cruise Contract Terms and Conditions

grandeur of the seas and valiant lady in portmiami
(DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

Cruise line policies on price drops also come with specific terms and conditions. Although these can vary from one cruise line to another, some common ones include:

  • The lower price must be for the same sailing date, stateroom type, and itinerary.
  • The lower price must be publicly available and not part of a restricted or private offer.
  • The price drop must be significant enough to qualify for the program (e.g., $50 or more).
  • Passengers must submit their claim within a specific time frame (e.g., 48 hours of booking).

Passengers should read and understand the terms and conditions of the price protection program before booking their cruise. Failure to meet any requirements may result in a denied claim.

Becky said, “A great example of a price restriction is cruise promotions, including free airfare. If the cruise fare drops after the final payment, the free air promo will not be available at that time, meaning that  difference in the cruise fare cannot be claimed, nor are any upgrades provided for this cabin.”

Steps to Take If a Price Drop Occurs

If you’ve already booked a cruise and noticed that the price has dropped, don’t worry. You can take steps to receive a refund or onboard credit.

Monitoring Cruise Price Drops

The key to catching a price drop is regularly monitoring the cruise price. Cruiseline.com offers price drop alerts that will notify you if your cruise costs drop via an email or text alert.

With the constant fluctuation in cruise pricing, these alerts can be a real money saver.

Contacting the Cruise Line or Travel Agent

When your cruise price drops, the first step is to contact the cruise line or travel agent you booked through

When contacting the cruise line or travel agent, be sure to have your booking information and specific details (the more specific, the better) of the price drop on hand.

It’s also important to be polite and respectful when speaking with customer service representatives. They are more likely to help you if you are friendly and understanding.

(Note: Remember, guest service reps are simply there to answer your call – they don’t create the policies themselves – so patience and understanding go a long way.)

Possible Outcomes of a Price Drop Claim

Outdoor seating at The Pizza Place (Photo courtesy of Virgin Voyages)

There are several possible outcomes if a cruise passenger notices a price drop after booking.

The cruise line’s policies and the timing of the claim will determine the options available to the passenger.

If guests request that the pricing for a booking be adjusted due to a drop in the cruise fare, all portions of the reservation can change. The prepaid gratuities may have been established at a rate that was initially at a lower amount.

If the booking is changed to claim a lower cruise fare, the prepaid gratuities can be increased to reflect the current amount established by the cruise line.

The same situation can develop with cruise port taxes/fees, as those may have increased. So, guests must ensure they gain more than they lose in the long run.

Cruise Stateroom Upgrades

(DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

One possible outcome of a price drop claim is a stateroom upgrade. Some cruise lines offer promotions for staterooms to passengers who have booked a lower-category stateroom and subsequently see a price reduction for a higher-category cabin.

The availability of upgrades depends on the cruise line’s policies, the timing of the claim, and the availability of the higher category stateroom.

Passengers who make their claims early are more likely to receive an upgrade than those who wait until closer to the sailing date.

Cruise Line Onboard Credit

Another possible outcome of a price drop claim is onboard credit, which is applied to your shipboard account and can be used for virtually any purchase onboard, be it shore excursions, drinks, spa treatments, or even gratuities.

The credit amount varies depending on the cruise line’s policies and the price drop.

Refund Difference

(DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

Although not always offered since providing stateroom upgrades or shipboard credits is more economically advantageous to the cruise line, a third possible outcome of a price drop claim is a refund of the difference between the original and lower prices.

The timing of the claim is essential, as some cruise lines have deadlines for submitting a claim. Passengers who miss the deadline may not be eligible for a refund.

Tips to Protect Your Cruise Investment

Booking with a Price Drop Guarantee

When booking a cruise, looking for a cruise line with a price drop guarantee is always a good idea. If the price of your cruise drops after you’ve booked, you can receive a stateroom upgrade, onboard credit, or refund credit for the difference.

Some cruise lines have specific timeframes for when you can receive a refund or credit, so it’s essential to read the fine print.

Not all stateroom categories or sailings may be eligible for a price drop guarantee, so checking with the cruise line before booking is important.

Purchasing Travel Insurance

Travel Insurance Chart

Another way to protect your cruise investment is by purchasing travel insurance, which can help protect you from unexpected events, such as illness or weather-related cancellations.

When purchasing your cruise, travel insurance is typically available through the cruise line or an independent third-party provider.

It’s essential to read the explanation of benefits (EOB) inside the policy carefully to understand what is covered and what is not.

Some policies may have specific exclusions for pre-existing conditions or certain activities, so it’s important to know what you’re getting before purchasing.

Travel Insurance is Recommended

cozumel mexico cruise ships multiple
Ships in Cozumel. (DOUG PARKER/CRUISE RADIO)

While travel insurance is strongly encouraged, it’s not mandatory. Dan Skiken, President of Trip Insurance.com, put it bluntly, “If a cruise line, tour operator, or travel agent tells you that you must buy travel insurance through them, they are lying.”

He noted the differences between buying vacation protection (which primarily covers your cruise) and travel insurance (which covers both on and off-the-ship events such as airline delays, lost luggage, medical coverage shoreside, and missing the ship due to a transportation issue).

In addition to protecting your investment, travel insurance can provide peace of mind while on your cruise.

If something does happen, you can rest assured that you’re covered and won’t be left with unexpected expenses.

Final Thoughts of Cruise Line Price Drops

Book with a Price Drop Guarantee to ensure you get the most value from your cruise. This will protect you against losing money in case of price drops and may offer stateroom upgrades, onboard credits, or refunds.

It’s important to note that getting a cruise price drop may not be as simple as it seems. The devil is in the details. If all of this seems like too much work, you can always wait and shop around for last-minute cruise deals.

However, it’s worth mentioning that even those are becoming increasingly rare these days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a refund if my cruise price drops after booking?

Not all cruise lines offer refunds, so it’s best to check with them or your travel agent to see if you’re eligible for one if the fare drops after booking.

When is the best time to book a cruise to get the best price?

The best time to book a cruise for the best price is typically during Wave Season, which runs from January to March. This is when most cruise lines offer special deals and promotions.

Is it worth waiting for last-minute cruise deals to save money?

There is a misperception that last-minute cruise deals are available closer to sailing and will offer these staterooms a huge discount. That is not the case, especially with higher occupancies these days.

5 Tips to Rent a Boat at an Affordable Price https://cruiseradio.net/5-tips-to-rent-a-boat-at-an-affordable-price/ Thu, 30 May 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=167590 Renting a boat is an exciting adventure that offers several opportunities, such as relaxation, water sports, transportation, or exploring nature.

A marina with numerous docked sailboats and yachts on a calm, reflective body of water. The background includes buildings and a cloudy sky, offering picturesque views where you can rent a boat at an affordable price.

You must consider the purpose for which you are renting the boat. Is it for a shore excursion once you get to the cruise port? To have access to a place that you typically wouldn’t? Or maybe just to decompress with you and your family after a week-long cruise.

However, renting a boat can be costly, especially when you are not careful when planning your rental. The good news is that some boat rental companies provide a wide range of boats and offers that can make the process easier. The only downside of boat renting is time and route restrictions.

Renting a boat at affordable prices is one way to save money. Here are a few tips on how to rent a boat at affordable prices.

  • When and how to book a boat: The best time to book a boat is far the advance time you want to use it. The best boats are usually reserved weeks or months in advance. These boats will be very much affordable. If you wait until the day you want to use a boat and pay, the cost will be too much, and you may not even see your dream boat for which to book. Remember that when you book early, there is always a discount.
  • Rent on Off-peak times: Renting a boat at off-peak times costs less. During weekdays, early in the mornings, or spring and fall seasons, the cost of renting a boat is less. Don’t wait for the summer season to come before renting because tourists are planning to travel, so it would be expensive to rent a boat.
  • Compare Prices: Always check out prices on other rental companies for boats before paying. Find out people’s reviews on any company you find when searching. Also, you can ask friends or family to recommend the best boat rental company with quality and affordable prices.
  • Check for special offers: Some companies may offer promos, discounts, or special offers on boat rentals. Follow any boat rental companies on social media or sign up for newsletters so you won’t miss out.
  • Join a group or boat club: This is one of the best ways to enjoy boat trips without spending much. The cost will be shared amongst club or group members, and your trip will be fun, too.

Conclusion

What is the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act (CVSSA)? https://cruiseradio.net/what-is-the-cruise-vessel-safety-and-security-act-cvssa/ Sun, 14 Apr 2024 21:46:17 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=162814 The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA) provides a framework for addressing crimes committed on cruise ships, with specific provisions to support victims.

Aerial view of Carnival Celebration in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
Aerial view of Carnival Celebration in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

This includes mandated assistance services and access to medical and legal resources, ensuring victims receive the necessary care and support.

The CVSSA applies to cruise ships that embark or disembark passengers in a United States port. This means it only applies to ships that make a stop at a U.S. port as part of their voyage, regardless of their origin or final destination.

Which Cruise Ships are Subject to the CVSSA?

A large cruise ship, the Carnival Jubilee, is docked at a bustling port.
  • Cruise ships that carry more than 250 passengers and embark or disembark passengers at a U.S. port fall under the jurisdiction of the CVSSA.
  • It doesn’t matter where the cruise ship is registered or where it sails (as long as it touches a U.S. port).

Which Maritime Jurisdictions are Covered?

The CVSSA only applies to U.S. territorial waters and on-board cruise ships while they are in U.S. territorial waters. Once a ship leaves U.S. territory, it falls under the jurisdiction of the country whose flag it’s registered under and any international agreements it’s subject to.

Advocacy and Assistance

Victims of crime, including sexual assault cases and abuse aboard cruise vessels, are entitled to receive immediate support. The CVSSA ensures that:

  • The Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act (CVSSA) ensures that cruise lines must offer confidential access to the National sexual assault hotline program and victim advocacy groups.
  • Under the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act, support services, including counseling, are available on-board for victims.
  • The on-board Security Officer is the primary contact for reporting crimes and coordinating victim assistance.

Training standards for crew members also include crime detection and evidence preservation procedures, essential steps in the law enforcement process.

Medical and Legal Resources for Cruise Ships

A scale of justice on a railing symbolizing justice and security

For victims of crime, the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act mandates:

  • Immediate medical care, including a forensic sexual assault examination by trained medical personnel, if needed.
  • Access to private communications with shore-based law enforcement officials, an attorney or legal representative, the embassy, and health care providers.
  • The CVSSA provides for preparations for evacuation to a facility onshore for additional treatment, emphasizing the importance of understanding the legal process under this Act.
  • Explanation of the legal process, including how to report crimes to U.S. federal agencies, such as the FBI, if the incident occurred in international waters or involved a United States national.

Victims’ rights under the CVSSA are transparent and aim to facilitate a supportive environment.

The Act necessitates that cruise lines be equipped to deal with serious crimes, providing victims with resources and guidance for their protection and the pursuit of justice.

Cruise Line Adoption of CVSAA

msc seaside cruise ship
MSC Seaside

In compliance with the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act, cruise lines have been required to adopt many safety protocols. Notably, these include installing rails at proper heights, systems for detecting and recording falls overboard, and ensuring the availability of hailing devices

The Act, specifically the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act, necessitates crime prevention and response training for crew members.

To address health and victim care, CVSSA mandates the accessibility of onboard medical staff trained in sexual assault trauma response and the maintenance of anti-retroviral medications and rape kits.

CVSSA also obliges cruise lines to provide security guides that clearly detail ship security personnel procedures and contact information for reporting crimes.

Public access to information about crime has been improved by requiring cruise lines to report criminal activities to the FBI and USCG, with the Maritime Administration (MARAD) involved in establishing training standards.

Effectiveness and Challenges

St. Maarten Maho Beach
Maho Beach in St. Maarten

The effectiveness of CVSSA faces hurdles concerning compliance and enforcement, particularly within the diverse international maritime jurisdictions

While the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act has led to improved vessel safety features and crew training, measuring its direct impact remains complex. Implementing technology for accurately recording and preserving evidence of crimes has been an operational challenge for some vessels.

Ensuring global itinerary compliance with CVSSA standards presents challenges due to varying international laws. Despite these obstacles, the Act has played a vital role in promoting the cruise industry’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of passengers onboard cruise ships.

However, ongoing oversight and adaptation are crucial to combat the ever-evolving threats faced at sea.

7 Best Cruise Lines for Babies and Toddlers https://cruiseradio.net/7-best-cruise-lines-for-babies-and-toddlers/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 05:39:13 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=139848 Planning a cruise with your precious munchkins? No need to fret about the logistics—this guide will be your go-to resource for discovering the best cruise lines for babies and toddlers!

While certain kid-friendly cruise lines cater primarily to families with kids three and older, others pamper their tiniest guests with a wealth of programs and amenities. These include nurseries, complimentary cribs and strollers, baby-friendly Splash Zone areas, and more.

1. Carnival Cruise Line

Minimum Sailing Age

For most Carnival Cruise Line voyages, children must be at least six months old upon embarkation. However, for transoceanic crossings and remote itineraries involving more than two consecutive sea days, children must be at least one year old.

Amenities Available

Cribs are offered and should be reserved when booking. High chairs and booster seats are available in shipboard dining rooms and restaurants. Single strollers can be rented on Carnival ships, subject to availability.

Sadly, diapers, baby supplies, baby food, and formula aren’t available on board, so parents should bring these items with them.

On a related note, it’s worth mentioning that some Carnival ships feature non-stocked mini bar units. Parents can ask the ship staff to refrigerate medicine and formula upon request if needed.

Tots and Family Programs

Carnival’s Camp Ocean features a free Penguins children’s program with a full schedule of daily fun activities for kids ages two to five.

Children don’t need potty training to participate, but parents must supply diapers and toiletries.

Camp Ocean also offers special play times for “Under 2s.” Parents/guardians can leave their child in the care of the Camp Ocean Youth Staff for a fee during these play times or stay and play with their little ones free of charge.

Carnival provides various family programs for guests with young children on every cruise, including the widely enjoyed Seuss at Sea activities across its fleet.

Some ships, like the Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, also include Dr. Seuss Bookville, a dedicated family reading venue.

Since in-stateroom babysitting isn’t an option on Carnival ships, parents may want to explore the ship’s designated kids’ activities.

One of these activities is the Camp Ocean’s Night Owls program, available for children aged six months to 11 years. This program takes place inside the Camp Ocean facility and includes various activities such as movie time, arts and crafts, toys, video games, snacks, and more.

Participating children don’t need to be potty-trained, but parents need to supply diapers and toiletries.

2. Celebrity Cruises

Like the Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises doesn’t offer strollers, formula, diapers, and other baby supplies. Families can use the in-room mini-bar for storage, but parents should ensure that it reaches a safe temperature for formula, food, and other perishable items.

20+ Best Things to Do on Carnival Mardi Gras [2024 Guide] https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-mardi-gras-cruise-ship-things-to-do/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 05:04:18 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-mardi-gras-cruise-ship-things-to-do/ With 20 decks and enough space for 6500 guests, Carnival’s Mardi Gras offers many fun attractions and innovative features. This includes Carnival Cruise Line’s first-ever roller coaster at sea!

Carnival Mardi Gras at San Juan

Mardi Gras is divided into six different zones that incorporate themed elements and spaces for hosting activities and events, over 20 dining options, and nearly the same number of bars and lounges.

While sailing on Mardi Gras in late October, I asked executives, journalists, crew members, and dozens of guests to name one or two “don’t miss” experiences on board.

Just The Facts
Total guest capacity:5,280 double occ., 6,500 full
Length:1,130 feet
Gross Tonnage:181,808
Decks:14
Cost:$1.14 billion
Homeport:Port Canaveral

So, without further ado, here are 20+ things to do on Carnival Mardi Gras:

1. Experience the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

BOLT is the first roller coaster at sea – and it’s quite a ride. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship, so don’t miss it. I rode BOLT three times on my cruise, and it’s addictive.

BOLT is a top-deck electric-powered roller coaster in Mardi Gras’ Ultimate Playground zone. This innovative roller coaster recently won a “Best of What’s New” engineering award granted by Popular Science magazine.

The ride’s elevated track spans the cruise ship’s upper decks and features 800 feet of thrilling twists, dips, and turns, including a zooming hairpin loop around Mardi Gras’ tri-colored funnel.

Riders on BOLT’s motorcycle-inspired vehicles can go as fast as 40 miles per hour while taking 360-degree views of the sea 187 feet below.

Frequent BOLT riders recommend going full throttle throughout the entire session and using your vehicle’s boost on the track’s straight sections and right before a dip. It’s good to leave a few seconds between each boost for maximum effect.

As of March 2024, BOLT is priced at $15 per person for a two-lap ride. Try to make reservations for a time during the first part of your cruise in case you need to reschedule due to weather.

2. Have fun at Carnival SkyCourse

Sky Course at Carnival Mardi Gras

Located in the Ultimate Playground zone, Carnival Mardi Gras’ 600-foot ropes course is the longest in Carnival’s fleet.

This thrilling ropes Sky Course features two levels: one for beginners and the other for guests seeking a major adrenaline rush.

Unlike some other cruise ship ropes courses you may have been on, the Mardi Gras ropes course has a zip line that takes riders out over the ocean with nothing but the water below. It’s a thrill!

Once you’ve done this free ropes course, you’ll likely want to do it again and again.

3. Take a Carnival Kitchen Cooking Class

Carnival Kitchen on Mardi Gras

Want to improve your pizza-making skills or upgrade your BBQ game? Take a Carnival Kitchen Cooking Class on Mardi Gras and learn from Carnival’s culinary pros.

A wide range of classes are available, from sushi-making to cake workshops. Classes are held each day (depending on demand) – sometimes two or three per day – for groups of 18 or less.

There’s also an evening workshop cooking class that includes making a delicious dinner that includes baking Carnival’s famous Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Classes are available for guests ages 12 and older, and prices vary depending on the class. Sign up online through your cruise manager as early as possible — they sell out fast!

4. Enjoy a Seaday Brunch

A pancake with marshmallows and syrup on a plate.

One of my favorite things about sea days on a Carnival cruise ship is enjoying a relaxing Seaday Brunch. The free Seaday Brunch is held in Mardi Gras’ main dining room, and it was as great as ever.

Carnival’s Seaday Brunch is popular among guests, so we avoided standing in line using the HUB app. Our table was ready in about ten minutes, and while we were waiting, we used the HUB app to check out the menu.

You’ll be glad you have the extra time — there’s so much to choose from on Carnival’s Seaday Brunch menu. From burgers and fried chicken to huevos rancheros and 12-hour French toast, there are plenty of options to delight every palate.

5. Explore the WaterWorks on Carnival Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras’ massive onboard waterpark is one of the largest in Carnival’s entire fleet (All the Excel-class ships have the same features). Located in the ship’s Ultimate Playground zone, the waterpark is a go-to spot for fun-loving kids and families, thrill-seekers, and the young at heart.

WaterWorks features three water slides – the 312-foot Blue Lightning, the 229-foot Orange Thunder, and the 265-foot spiraling Carnival Twister waterslide.

Zipping down these splash-tastic water slides hits the spot on a hot day. There’s also a 150-gallon power-drencher tipping bucket and a splash zone for kids with many fantastic water elements.

6. Dine at Rudi’s Seagrill

Rudi Sodamin, Holland America Line’s amazing Master Chef, has been wowing guests of Carnival’s sister line for years. Now, Chef Rudi has brought his extraordinary skills to Carnival Mardi Gras by launching his specialty seafood restaurant, Rudi’s Seagrill.

Rudi Sodamin’s multi-course dining experience is phenomenal and well worth the $49 per-person charge. Seafood entrées include crab stuffed lobster tail, roasted halibut, crab cake, dover sole, and grilled colossal shrimp.

The 14 oz. New York Strip Steak, Berkshire Pork Chop, and Free Range Chicken at Rudi’s Seagrill will surely please those who aren’t seafood lovers.

Rudi’s Seagrill is another one that is super popular, so make your reservations well in advance.

7. Taste Emeril’s Bistro 1396’s Fried Oysters

Emeril's Bistro 1396 fried oysters.

The crown jewel of Mardi Gras’ French Quarter zone is Emeril’s Bistro 1396, legendary chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant at sea.

Located in the heart of the French Quarter on Deck 6, Emeril’s Bistro 1396 features the authentic New Orleans flavors of Emeril’s hometown.

The celebrity chef specially created the restaurant’s menu, which features individually-priced small plates, “A Little More” entrees, “A Little Sweet” desserts, kids’ meals, a raw and chilled seafood bar, and even a breakfast menu.

Menu items have Emeril’s signature Creole twist and include Sizzling Cast Iron Shrimp Scampi, Fried Oysters, Emeril’s New Orleans Style Barbecue Shrimp, Roasted Duck and andouille Sausage Gumbo, Lemon Ice Box Pie, and Bananas Foster.

The food at Emeril’s Bistro is delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. We ended up dining here multiple times during our cruise.

Don’t miss coming to Emeril’s for breakfast. The Pain Perdu, Sweet Potato Waffles, and freshly made New Orleans-style coffee are outstanding.

8. Experience the Bar Crawl on Carnival Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras offers guests close to 20 excellent bars and lounges onboard.

There are tons of new specialty drinks and bars to try on this ship. Head to a fun Mardi Gras Bar Crawl and discover fabulous new bars, cocktails, and old favorites. You’ll find two can’t-miss spots in Mardi Gras’ French Quarter.

The Brass Magnolia has a New Orleans-inspired atmosphere, serving strong Hurricanes and live jazz music.

The Fortune Teller Bar, another brand new bar in Carnival Cruise Line, is also located on the ship. Make sure to order a Crystal Ball cocktail.

Bar Della Rosa, a new Carnival bar in the Italian-themed La Piazza zone, serves espresso drinks during the day, Italian cocktails, and wine at night.

The Grand Central atrium is home to two bars, making it easy for those watching a show to get a drink.

The Carnival Mardi Gras bar line-up also features popular favorites, including the Alchemy Bar, Havana Bar, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse, and Piano Bar 88.

Carnival cruise lovers will be happy to know that the RedFrog Rum Bar has been expanded into the two-story RedFrog Tiki Bar on Mardi Gras.

Don’t miss the incredible views at The Watering Hole in the Summer Landing Zone, and stop by the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge while you’re in that area, too. Carnival will donate a portion of the sale to benefit Operation Homefront when you purchase a specialty cocktail or beer in a souvenir glass.

9. Eat some burgers at Guy’s Burger Joint

Guy’s Burger Joint on Mardi Gras

Guy’s Burger Joint on Deck 17 is Fieri’s first Carnival Cruise Line dining venue, and it’s as popular as ever on Mardi Gras. It serves the same handcrafted burgers and fries we all love.

Not only is the Guy’s Burger Joint on this ship the largest at sea, but its also free.

Barbecue lovers should head down to Deck 8 for excellent smoked meats, comfort food sides, and a home-brewed beer at Guy Fieri’s other restaurant, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse. All meals at Guy’s Pig & Anchor are currently free of charge on Mardi Gras.

10. Enjoy a meal at Big Chicken

The much-awaited Big Chicken restaurant launched on Mardi Gras, and it’s already a huge hit.

Created by Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal, Big Chicken offers a wide array of tasty chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, and even a fried chicken basket. It’s also the first Big Chicken on a cruise ship.

Guests can choose from white or dark meat (grilled chicken available on request), and items can be ordered with fries and sides like jalapeño slaw, potato salad, and sweet and spicy pickles.

Big Chicken also offers a large toppings bar and, as the restaurant’s sign says, “We Encourage Sauciness.” Sauces include Shaq sauce, barbecue, buttermilk ranch, and buffalo hot sauce.

Big Chicken is open for lunch and dinner; breakfast is served until 3 p.m. daily. Make sure to try the breakfast biscuits – they’re delicious.

11. Explore the Grand Central Atrium Shows & Entertainment

The innovative three-deck-high Grand Central Atrium space is one of Carnival Mardi Gras’ six themed zones – and it’s a winner.

The atrium’s huge 3,000 square-foot glass panels built into the ship’s side provide guests with beautiful sea views. It’s a wonderful place to relax, listen to live music, or participate in games and contests.

At night, the Grand Central Atrium transforms into a multi-story venue for spectacular shows with talented performances, aerial acrobatics, and special effects. The Grand Central Atrium’s 16 massive LED screens can display videos, lasers, and other unique effects – providing an ever-changing backdrop.

Don’t miss the ship’s New Orleans Celebration with its Mardi Gras-style parade and incredible “Voodoo Moon” performance. It’s one of the most fantastic entertainment experiences I’ve seen at sea.

12. Dine at Chef’s Table

Chef's Table Carnival Mardi Gras
Chef’s Table

Foodies rave about the Chef’s Table on Mardi Gras. At $119 per person (as of March 2024), this small group multi-course dining experience is a splurge – but it’s a VIP experience for just 14 guests hosted by the Master Executive Chef.

The Chef’s Table features cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a unique menu of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. It has its own space on Deck 5 Aft.

Guests must be at least 12 years of age or older to participate. Since limited seating is available, make your reservations as early as possible.

13. Eat a freshly-made pizza at Pizzeria del Capitano

Pizzeria del Capitano Carnival Mardi Gras
Pizzeria del Capitano

Located in the La Piazza zone on Carnival Mardi Gras, Pizzeria del Capitano serves fantastic freshly-made pizza 20 hours a day.

(Note: The pizza place was open 24 hours per day until the decision was made to reduce the hours in 2022.)

Different hand-tossed thin-crust pies are available, including:

  • Margherita,
  • Funghi (mushroom)
  • Pepperoni
  • Quattro Formaggi (four cheese)
  • Prosciutto.
  • Guests can also request a gluten-free pie or a Caesar salad.

Piazza Panini is located within the La Piazza area, and a counter-service sandwich shop is open until 10 p.m., nightly.

Guests can order classic deli sandwiches, including Reubens and meatball subs, delicious paninis such as a Caprese panini (served hot or cold), or meat-lovers varieties like Carne or Salumeria. Yummy desserts are available after 8 p.m. daily.

Best of all, both Pizzeria del Capitano and Piazza Panini are free.

14. Eat cheesesteak fries at Street Eats on Carnival Mardi Gras

Street Eat Fries Carnival Mardi Gras
Street Eat Fries

Street Eats is a new dining concept in Carnival Cruise Line, located on Lido Deck 16 around Mardi Gras’ Beach Pool area. Inspired by food trucks and street eateries, Street Eats consists of three open-air counter-service stalls — Steam Dream, Mad Sizzle, and Time Fries.

Steam Dream serves delicious bao buns and potstickers, while Mad Sizzle features kebabs and satays. Time Fries features chef-created french fries loaded with toppings, such as Cheesesteak Fries.

Street Eats is free of charge and open for lunch. The menus change constantly throughout the week so drop by there every day.

If you like these kinds of food stalls, don’t miss having lobster rolls at the Seafood Shack (available for an extra charge) and the free shawarma station and hot dog stations in the Lido Marketplace. The Lido’s free gelato is also a big hit among kids and adults.

15. See a Family Feud Live

Carnival Mardi Gras Family Feud

It’s fitting that Carnival’s Fun Ship should also feature an exciting new game show. Family Feud™ Live launched on Mardi Gras, and it had a packed house on our cruise.

The set is exactly like the one you’ve seen on the iconic TV game show. Our cruise director and teams participating in Family Feud™ Live on our sailing made the entertainment experience fast-paced and fun.

16. Enjoy Chinese cuisine at Chibang!

This unique restaurant that combines Chinese and Mexican cuisines is another first for Carnival Cruise Line. Located on Deck 8, Chibang! is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I didn’t expect to be wowed by this restaurant, but we ended up eating here twice on our cruise.

The lunch menu consists of build-your-own bowls, while dinner is a multi-course affair offering Chinese and Mexican selections.

Guests can mix and match from both sides of the menu, with choices like Sweet and sour Shrimp, Kung Pao Chicken, Steak Ranchero, and Pescado Frito.

17. Try Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse’s Baked Onion Soup

A freshly baked french onion soup with melted cheese on top in a white bowl on Carnival Mardi Gras.

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse is a superb dining experience on this cruise ship, and making reservations early is important. This upscale specialty restaurant is located on Deck 7 and carries a surcharge of $49 per person for a superb four-course meal, which is well worth the cost.

Starters include Baked Onion Soup, Lobster Bisque, Smoked Fresh Oysters, and Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, followed by a good choice of salads.

Entrees include a 14-oz. New York Strip Loin Steak, an 18-oz Cowboy Steak, Filet Mignon, Surf & Turf, Broiled Lobster Tail, and Grilled Lamb Chops accompanied by a selection of delicious side dishes, sauces, and artisan salts.

This poolside Mexican cantina restaurant on Carnival Mardi Gras’ Deck 16 serves free burritos, tacos, and other tasty lunch items made with fish, chicken, or pork. There’s a great toppings bar here, too.

Don’t miss their breakfast burritos loaded with scrambled eggs. They’re so good!

19. Laugh out loud at Punchliner Comedy Club

Carnival Mardi Gras Comedy Club
Punchliner

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its outstanding Punchliner Comedy Club and is incredibly popular on Mardi Gras. The ship features both family-friendly and adult-only shows.

Waiting lines formed well before showtimes, with multiple shows offered daily. Many guests in our group planned their evenings around The Punchliner Comedy Club shows throughout the cruise.

20. Relax in Serenity or Loft 19

Mardi Gras Loft 19
Loft 19

The adults-only Serenity Retreat on Mardi Gras is a lovely oasis with a pool, whirlpool, padded loungers, clamshell chairs, the Serenity Bar, and a Fresh Creations salad station. It’s a peaceful spot to chill out with friends.

Located one deck above, Loft 19 is yet another first for a Carnival cruise ship, and it’s a quiet space designed for privacy and relaxing.

Guests staying in Excel Suites on Carnival Mardi Gras have complimentary access to the exclusive Loft 19 area for their entire cruise and priority for cabana rentals.

Loft 19 features plush lounge chairs and a large infinity whirlpool, but the area’s 12 five-person cabanas must be rented for an additional fee from $500 per day to $3,000 per week.

Other Mardi Gras guests can purchase loft 19 access if a cabana is available.

While the Serenity and Serenity Bar area is for guests ages 21 and older, kids are welcome in Loft 19 with proper access.

21. Pay a visit to Cloud 9 Spa Thermal Suite

Mardi Gras Thermal Suite
Cloud 9 Spa Thermal Suite

Getting a Cloud 9 thermal suite pass for the day or week is the ultimate way to spend the day if you don’t want to get off the ship. There is a mineral pool, heated tile loungers, steam and dry heat chambers, and rainfall showers to wash your stress away.

This area is capacity controlled, meaning they only sell a certain amount of passes per week until it is declared sold out. The Cloud 9 Thermal Suite prices could vary by sailing, so expect to pay anywhere from $30 for a day pass, up to $149 for the entire week.

22. Experience Mardi Gras Theater’s Playlist Productions

Mardi Gras Playlist production
Playlist Productions

Though small considering the size of the shop, with a maximum capacity of 900 people, Mardi Gras Theater offers more than just the Family Feud game show.

The theater offers full-scale musical shows (Playlist Productions) that bring your favorite tunes to life with talented singers and dancers.

With themes from 80s pop, jazz, Latin rhythms, and piano-pounding arena rock, you’ll find a production that suits your taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Carnival Mardi Gras sail from?

Carnival Mardi Gras sets sail from Terminal 3 at Port Canaveral in Central Florida. The port has a brand-new cruise terminal built specifically for Mardi Gras.

Port Canaveral is a world-class cruise and cargo port voted as the best North American Homeport. It’s the fastest-growing cruise port in Florida.

Is Mardi Gras the biggest Carnival cruise ship?

No. The biggest Carnival cruise ship is Carnival Jubilee, followed by Carnival Celebration and then Mardi Gras.

What are the cons of Carnival Mardi Gras?

The main con is that some areas are too small for the number of guests on the ship, especially the Mardi Gras theater, Punchliner comedy club, and the limelight lounge. The entertainment department tries to alleviate this by presenting multiple shows around the ship simultaneously.

Pet Cruises: Are There Any Cruise Lines That Allow Pets? https://cruiseradio.net/pet-cruises-are-there-any-cruise-lines-that-allow-pets/ Sun, 11 Feb 2024 03:35:07 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=141126 Are you dreaming of sipping umbrella drinks on the Lido deck while Fido splashes around in the pool? If so, you must wonder, are any cruise lines allowing pets?

(Photo via Cunard)

Although limited, some cruise lines allow pets, including the Cunard Queen Mary 2, Tallink Silja Line, and DFDS Mini Cruise. Additionally, most cruise lines gladly allow service animals to accompany passengers with disabilities free of charge.

Should you bring your pet along on a cruise, though? Will your pet enjoy their time on the ship? And what are the pros and cons of bringing a pet on a cruise?

Find out all you need to know in our FAQ on cruising with cats and dogs. Keep in mind this article covers pets and not service animals. Service animal policies can be coordinated through the cruise line accessibility department.

Can I Take My Pet Dog or Cat on a Cruise?

Cunard line is one cruise lines that allow pets, both dogs and cats.

The answer is yes. You can take your pet dog or cat on a cruise if you opt for one of the cruise lines that allow pets.

Cruise LineCost Per Pet Per Trip
Cunard Queen Mary 2$980 – $3,000
Tallink Silja Line$35
DFDS Mini Cruise$19
1AVisa Reisen$149
Mercury’s Canine Cruise$8
Scenic Cruise St. AugustineNo Additional Cost
Cruises On The Bay (Watermark Journey)No Additional Cost
DIY Stena Line CruiseFree – $37
Le Boat$70 to $113
Blue & Gold Fleet Bay Cruises$25

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 has to be the most notable of the bunch. The pet-friendly transatlantic cruise allows cruisers to take their pet dog or cat on sailings from New York to Southampton or Hamburg, provided they can book a spot in The Kennels, the special pet area on the ship.

Note: No other animals, such as birds or ferrets, are allowed onboard.

Potential cruisers should note that Queen Mary 2 only has 24 kennels, and cats and larger dogs require a double kennel, severely limiting the number of passengers who can cruise with their pets.

The waitlist is incredibly long. Dogs and cats do not cruise free; rates range from $800 to $1,000 for a single kennel and twice that for a double.

A cat is sitting inside a kennel, potentially preparing for a cruise vacation with pet-friendly amenities provided by certain cruise lines.

Pet owners should understand that their cat or dog will not be sleeping in their bed with them. Pets will spend the entire cruise in The Kennels and are not allowed in cabins or public areas of the ship. Owners can visit with their pets only during specified visiting hours.

As a Cunard transatlantic cruise typically has no port calls (or one if your cruise from Hamburg stops in Southampton), you will not have the opportunity to take your pet off the ship for walks on land. Learn more about Queen Mary 2’s kennels and pet policy.

Can You Take Service Dogs on a Cruise?

A dalmatian dog sits on the deck of a pet-friendly cruise ship.

Most cruise lines allow travelers with disabilities to bring service dogs onboard.

A service animal is specifically trained to perform tasks related to helping a human, such as leading a blind person or protecting a person having a seizure. They are working animals — typically dogs — and not pets.

Note that Cunard keeps service dogs separate from its kennel guests. Working animals can’t access The Kennels and their facilities — like how crew get separate dining and lounge spaces from passengers.

Service animals are allowed in cabins and public areas as long as they’re on a leash; however, they’re banned from swimming pools and hot tubs, the ship’s galley, and areas specific to kids or crew.

Unlike pets, service animals cruise for free. If you want to learn more about taking a service dog on a cruise, I recommend checking out Molly Burke’s video about her experience bringing her guide dog along on Celebrity Edge.

What Do I Need to Pack for a Pet or Service Animal on a Cruise?

A dog on a cruise ship.

Cruisers are responsible for bringing pet food and treats, water bowls, leashes, toys, and bedding for their animal. Cunard does provide food for pets cruising in The Kennels.

While Cunard carries life jackets for large and small animals, most other lines do not. If Fifi needs a floatie, you’ll need to pack your own.

Cruise lines will provide a sandbox or area of mulch for a service animal to relieve itself. The animal owner is responsible for cleaning up after his dog, though the crew will clean the relief box daily.

A dog sits on a balcony overlooking the water.

You must alert the cruise line’s access department, often within 30 days of cruising, to request a relief area. Note that the relief box will not be in your cabin or your private balcony, though the crew will try to keep it as close to your accommodations as possible.

Royal Caribbean takes extra care to note that the Central Park area on Oasis-class ships is not an acceptable place for your service dog to relieve itself. People, it’s not like the dog parks at home!

Can Emotional Support Animals Go on Cruises?

No. Because the cruise lines cannot verify that a supposed emotional support animal is a working animal, they do not allow them onboard.

All Carnival Corporation lines have fine print saying that, “emotional support animals are not recognized by the United States Department of Justice as service animals and therefore are not permitted to sail.”

In the past, travelers have tried to sneak their pets onboard in the guise of emotional support animals, forcing cruise lines (and airlines) to make policy changes to ban them.

Just because you can take a pet or service animal on a cruise doesn’t mean you should. Your pet may not enjoy the afternoon tea and ballroom dancing on Cunard as you do and might be sad that it’s spending most of its time away from you in the kennel.

We also read an account of a service animal who refused to relieve itself onboard the cruise ship and would only do so in port.

That meant it suffered an entire sea day without peeing, distressing its owner, who truly cared for his canine companion. Imagine if that had been a transatlantic cruise. You never know in advance how an animal will react to living in the artificial setting of a cruise ship.

Animal owners should note that cruise lines, including Cunard, do not offer vet services. Should Fluffy or Fido fall ill onboard, you’ll have to wait until a port day to find a vet in a foreign country or hope they can manage until the cruise ends. Do you want to risk your favorite dog or cat in that way?

Finally, individual countries have specific instructions about whether animals can come ashore and what proof of health and vaccination they need to be allowed.

The animal’s owner must research the rules for each port of call and ensure that your four-legged companion gets all the necessary shots and documentation.

If your animal can’t come ashore, you will be forced to stay onboard; Rover can’t hang out in your cabin watching TV and ordering room service while you go on that sightseeing excursion in port.

We all desire to spend more time with our pets, but because they can’t accompany us everywhere, there are various pet care options to consider when we need to get away.

Are There Cruises for Animal Lovers?

Yes. Animal lovers can connect on themed cruises, though Fluffy and Fido will need to remain at home. Options vary yearly, but if you’re in a pet-lovers group, consider getting together to plan an animal-themed vacation at sea.

The Meow Meow Cruise is an annual sailing that attracts cat lovers who enjoy private group dinners, trivia games, cocktail parties, and scavenger hunts. I could not find an existing dog lovers’ cruise, so maybe it’s time for you to organize one!

Cruise Lines That Allow Pets FAQ

Should You Cruise With a Large Dog?

While pet-friendly cruises like Cunard accept dogs of all sizes in their kennels, larger dogs have distinct disadvantages when cruising. Big breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs, and St. Bernards require two kennels instead of one, which doubles the cost. These dogs have large bladders, making it more challenging to go all day without relief.

How Can I Entertain My Dog on a Cruise?

Dogs left alone in an enclosed kennel all day need mental stimulation and entertainment so they don’t become anxious or bored. You’ll need to pack some puzzle toys, kongs stuffed with peanut butter, rawhides, and chews. Also, bring comfortable bedding that smells like home. Thoughtful preparation is key here!

I recommend asking about scheduling play visits with your pup and the possibility of walks on the deck at specified times. You can also request that the kennel staff pay special attention to your dog if they have difficulty adjusting to the cruise.

Exploring Pet Care Options for Your Next Cruise Vacation https://cruiseradio.net/finding-pet-care-next-cruise/ Sat, 10 Feb 2024 15:42:53 +0000 https://cruise.blazesync.com/?p=19123 When planning a vacation, exploring various pet care options is a must to ensure the well-being of our furry friends while we’re away.

If you plan to vacation or take some time off, you can find trustworthy pet care services such as professional pet sitting or pet boarding facilities. However, before picking either of these services, it’s important to consider your pet’s personality, medical requirements, and comfort level.

Professional Pet Sitters

Hiring a professional pet sitter can provide a personalized approach to pet care while on vacation. Unlike boarding facilities, pet sitters offer a unique service that allows your pets to remain in the comfort of their own home.

With regular visits, they can tend to your pets’ needs, including feeding, exercise, and companionship. This personalized care helps reduce stress and anxiety for your pets, as they can stay in their familiar environment.

Professional pet sitters also go the extra mile by offering additional services that contribute to your pets’ overall well-being. They can help maintain the routine and provide comfort by bringing in your mail, watering plants, and even providing added security for your home.

Before entrusting your pets to a pet sitter, take the time to evaluate their credentials and experience. Ask for references from other satisfied clients to gain insight into their reputation and reliability. Communication is key, so provide clear instructions and discuss your pet’s needs and routines.

Boarding Facilities

When pet owners go on vacation, they often worry about the well-being of their furry friends. Thankfully, boarding facilities provide a safe and comfortable environment where pets can stay while their owners are away. These facilities offer various services, including pet boarding for dogs and cats, pet daycare, and overnight hotel options.

Boarding facilities typically have individual kennels or rooms where pets can stay. The dedicated staff ensures that all pets are well cared for, attending to their feeding, exercise, and grooming needs. The goal is to provide a home-like atmosphere where pets feel comfortable and secure.

Some boarding facilities go above and beyond by offering additional services such as pet daycare. This allows pets to socialize and engage in supervised activities to keep them entertained and mentally stimulated. For pet owners who want their furry friends to enjoy a bit of luxury, there are even pet hotels with amenities like cozy beds, play areas, and spa treatments.

Choosing the Right Boarding Facility

When selecting a boarding facility for your pet, it’s important to consider a few key factors. Take the time to visit the facility in person, ensuring that it meets your standards of cleanliness and maintenance. Please inquire about the qualifications and experience of the staff caring for your pet to ensure they have the necessary expertise.

Discuss the daily routine followed at the facility, including exercise options, to ensure your pet’s needs are met. If your pet has any special requirements, such as dietary restrictions or medical needs, communicate these to the boarding facility beforehand to ensure they can accommodate them.

Pet Sitter vs. Boarding: Choosing Pet Care Options

When deciding between a pet sitter and boarding facility for your furry friend, it’s important to consider various factors. Both options have advantages, depending on your pet’s needs and preferences. Let’s explore the key points to help you make an informed decision.

Pet Sitter: Personalized Care in Familiar Surroundings

A pet sitter provides personalized care for your pet in the familiar surroundings of your home. This option allows your pet to stay comfortable, reducing stress and anxiety. A pet sitter can visit your home regularly to feed, exercise, and spend quality time with your pet. Additionally, they can take care of other tasks, such as bringing in the mail and ensuring the security of your home.

Boarding Facility: 24/7 Supervision and Socialization Opportunities

A boarding facility offers a dedicated space for your pet, with staff available round-the-clock. This can be beneficial if your pet requires constant supervision or has special medical needs. Boarding facilities often provide socialization opportunities and structured exercise routines, ideal for pets who thrive on interaction and physical activity.

Friends and Neighbors

Another option for pet care during your vacation is relying on friends or neighbors to care for your pets. This can be a cost-effective solution and provides the benefit of familiarity for your pets.

However, it’s important to ensure that the person caring for your pets is trustworthy, reliable, and knowledgeable about your pet’s needs.

During my recent trips, I have relied on my friends and neighbors to care for my dog and cat. It is convenient and gives me peace of mind, knowing that my pets are in the hands of people I trust. They know my pets’ routines, feeding schedules, and playtime preferences.

To ensure a smooth experience, I always provide them with detailed instructions. I write down the feeding schedules, medication administration guidelines, and emergency contact information clearly and concisely. This helps them follow my pet’s routine and address any potential issues.

Bringing Them with You: Traveling with Your Pets

Did you know that a cruise line lets you travel with your dog or cat? And I am not talking about service animals. Cunard Line has a kennel onboard its Queen Mary 2 cruise ship.

Do know that if you prefer to travel with your pets, it’s essential to plan ahead to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Researching pet-friendly accommodations that allow pets and making reservations in advance is crucial.

Additionally, familiarize yourself with travel regulations, such as airline policies and destination requirements, including vaccinations and travel certificates to avoid any last-minute surprises. Pack essential items such as their favorite food, water bowls, medication, bedding, toys, and any necessary documentation to make the journey comfortable for your furry friend.

Not all destinations or establishments are pet-friendly, so checking in advance is always best. Look for pet-friendly accommodations that offer suitable amenities for your pets.

These may include designated pet areas, ample space for exercise and play, and even pet-sitting services if you need some alone time. Likewise, research local dog-friendly restaurants and cafes that will welcome your furry companion.
