No need to fret about the logistics—this guide will be your go-to resource for discovering the best cruise lines for babies and toddlers!

While certain kid-friendly cruise lines cater primarily to families with kids three and older, others pamper their tiniest guests with a wealth of programs and amenities. These include nurseries, complimentary cribs and strollers, baby-friendly Splash Zone areas, and more.

Minimum Sailing Age

For most Carnival Cruise Line voyages, children must be at least six months old upon embarkation. However, for transoceanic crossings and remote itineraries involving more than two consecutive sea days, children must be at least one year old.

Amenities Available

Cribs are offered and should be reserved when booking. High chairs and booster seats are available in shipboard dining rooms and restaurants. Single strollers can be rented on Carnival ships, subject to availability.

Sadly, diapers, baby supplies, baby food, and formula aren’t available on board, so parents should bring these items with them.

On a related note, it’s worth mentioning that some Carnival ships feature non-stocked mini bar units. Parents can ask the ship staff to refrigerate medicine and formula upon request if needed.

Tots and Family Programs

Carnival’s Camp Ocean features a free Penguins children’s program with a full schedule of daily fun activities for kids ages two to five.

Children don’t need potty training to participate, but parents must supply diapers and toiletries.

Carnival provides various family programs for guests with young children on every cruise, including the widely enjoyed Seuss at Sea activities across its fleet.

Some ships, like the Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, also include Dr. Seuss Bookville, a dedicated family reading venue.

One of these activities is the Camp Ocean’s Night Owls program, available for children aged six months to 11 years. This program takes place inside the Camp Ocean facility and includes various activities such as movie time, arts and crafts, toys, video games, snacks, and more.

Participating children don’t need to be potty-trained, but parents need to supply diapers and toiletries.

20+ Best Things to Do on Carnival Mardi Gras [2024 Guide] https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-mardi-gras-cruise-ship-things-to-do/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 05:04:18 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/carnival-mardi-gras-cruise-ship-things-to-do/ With 20 decks and enough space for 6500 guests, Carnival’s Mardi Gras offers many fun attractions and innovative features. This includes Carnival Cruise Line’s first-ever roller coaster at sea!

Carnival Mardi Gras at San Juan

Mardi Gras is divided into six different zones that incorporate themed elements and spaces for hosting activities and events, over 20 dining options, and nearly the same number of bars and lounges.

While sailing on Mardi Gras in late October, I asked executives, journalists, crew members, and dozens of guests to name one or two “don’t miss” experiences on board.

Just The Facts
Total guest capacity:5,280 double occ., 6,500 full
Length:1,130 feet
Gross Tonnage:181,808
Decks:14
Cost:$1.14 billion
Homeport:Port Canaveral

So, without further ado, here are 20+ things to do on Carnival Mardi Gras:

1. Experience the BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster

BOLT is the first roller coaster at sea – and it’s quite a ride. It’s unlike anything you’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship, so don’t miss it. I rode BOLT three times on my cruise, and it’s addictive.

BOLT is a top-deck electric-powered roller coaster in Mardi Gras’ Ultimate Playground zone. This innovative roller coaster recently won a “Best of What’s New” engineering award granted by Popular Science magazine.

The ride’s elevated track spans the cruise ship’s upper decks and features 800 feet of thrilling twists, dips, and turns, including a zooming hairpin loop around Mardi Gras’ tri-colored funnel.

Riders on BOLT’s motorcycle-inspired vehicles can go as fast as 40 miles per hour while taking 360-degree views of the sea 187 feet below.

Frequent BOLT riders recommend going full throttle throughout the entire session and using your vehicle’s boost on the track’s straight sections and right before a dip. It’s good to leave a few seconds between each boost for maximum effect.

As of March 2024, BOLT is priced at $15 per person for a two-lap ride. Try to make reservations for a time during the first part of your cruise in case you need to reschedule due to weather.

2. Have fun at Carnival SkyCourse

Sky Course at Carnival Mardi Gras

Located in the Ultimate Playground zone, Carnival Mardi Gras’ 600-foot ropes course is the longest in Carnival’s fleet.

This thrilling ropes Sky Course features two levels: one for beginners and the other for guests seeking a major adrenaline rush.

Unlike some other cruise ship ropes courses you may have been on, the Mardi Gras ropes course has a zip line that takes riders out over the ocean with nothing but the water below. It’s a thrill!

Once you’ve done this free ropes course, you’ll likely want to do it again and again.

3. Take a Carnival Kitchen Cooking Class

Carnival Kitchen on Mardi Gras
Carnival Kitchen on Mardi Gras

Want to improve your pizza-making skills or upgrade your BBQ game? Take a Carnival Kitchen Cooking Class on Mardi Gras and learn from Carnival’s culinary pros.

A wide range of classes are available, from sushi-making to cake workshops. Classes are held each day (depending on demand) – sometimes two or three per day – for groups of 18 or less.

There’s also an evening workshop cooking class that includes making a delicious dinner that includes baking Carnival’s famous Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Classes are available for guests ages 12 and older, and prices vary depending on the class. Sign up online through your cruise manager as early as possible — they sell out fast!

4. Enjoy a Seaday Brunch

A pancake with marshmallows and syrup on a plate.

One of my favorite things about sea days on a Carnival cruise ship is enjoying a relaxing Seaday Brunch. The free Seaday Brunch is held in Mardi Gras’ main dining room, and it was as great as ever.

Carnival’s Seaday Brunch is popular among guests, so we avoided standing in line using the HUB app. Our table was ready in about ten minutes, and while we were waiting, we used the HUB app to check out the menu.

You’ll be glad you have the extra time — there’s so much to choose from on Carnival’s Seaday Brunch menu. From burgers and fried chicken to huevos rancheros and 12-hour French toast, there are plenty of options to delight every palate.

5. Explore the WaterWorks on Carnival Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras’ massive onboard waterpark is one of the largest in Carnival’s entire fleet (All the Excel-class ships have the same features). Located in the ship’s Ultimate Playground zone, the waterpark is a go-to spot for fun-loving kids and families, thrill-seekers, and the young at heart.

WaterWorks features three water slides – the 312-foot Blue Lightning, the 229-foot Orange Thunder, and the 265-foot spiraling Carnival Twister waterslide.

Zipping down these splash-tastic water slides hits the spot on a hot day. There’s also a 150-gallon power-drencher tipping bucket and a splash zone for kids with many fantastic water elements.

6. Dine at Rudi’s Seagrill

Rudi's Seagrill Carnival Mardi Gras

Rudi Sodamin, Holland America Line’s amazing Master Chef, has been wowing guests of Carnival’s sister line for years. Now, Chef Rudi has brought his extraordinary skills to Carnival Mardi Gras by launching his specialty seafood restaurant, Rudi’s Seagrill.

Rudi Sodamin’s multi-course dining experience is phenomenal and well worth the $49 per-person charge. Seafood entrées include crab stuffed lobster tail, roasted halibut, crab cake, dover sole, and grilled colossal shrimp.

The 14 oz. New York Strip Steak, Berkshire Pork Chop, and Free Range Chicken at Rudi’s Seagrill will surely please those who aren’t seafood lovers.

Rudi’s Seagrill is another one that is super popular, so make your reservations well in advance.

7. Taste Emeril’s Bistro 1396’s Fried Oysters

Emeril's Bistro 1396 fried oysters.

The crown jewel of Mardi Gras’ French Quarter zone is Emeril’s Bistro 1396, legendary chef Emeril Lagasse’s first restaurant at sea.

Located in the heart of the French Quarter on Deck 6, Emeril’s Bistro 1396 features the authentic New Orleans flavors of Emeril’s hometown.

The celebrity chef specially created the restaurant’s menu, which features individually-priced small plates, “A Little More” entrees, “A Little Sweet” desserts, kids’ meals, a raw and chilled seafood bar, and even a breakfast menu.

Menu items have Emeril’s signature Creole twist and include Sizzling Cast Iron Shrimp Scampi, Fried Oysters, Emeril’s New Orleans Style Barbecue Shrimp, Roasted Duck and andouille Sausage Gumbo, Lemon Ice Box Pie, and Bananas Foster.

The food at Emeril’s Bistro is delicious, and the prices are very reasonable. We ended up dining here multiple times during our cruise.

Don’t miss coming to Emeril’s for breakfast. The Pain Perdu, Sweet Potato Waffles, and freshly made New Orleans-style coffee are outstanding.

8. Experience the Bar Crawl on Carnival Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras offers guests close to 20 excellent bars and lounges onboard.

There are tons of new specialty drinks and bars to try on this ship. Head to a fun Mardi Gras Bar Crawl and discover fabulous new bars, cocktails, and old favorites. You’ll find two can’t-miss spots in Mardi Gras’ French Quarter.

The Brass Magnolia has a New Orleans-inspired atmosphere, serving strong Hurricanes and live jazz music.

The Fortune Teller Bar, another brand new bar in Carnival Cruise Line, is also located on the ship. Make sure to order a Crystal Ball cocktail.

Bar Della Rosa, a new Carnival bar in the Italian-themed La Piazza zone, serves espresso drinks during the day, Italian cocktails, and wine at night.

The Grand Central atrium is home to two bars, making it easy for those watching a show to get a drink.

The Carnival Mardi Gras bar line-up also features popular favorites, including the Alchemy Bar, Havana Bar, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse, and Piano Bar 88.

Carnival cruise lovers will be happy to know that the RedFrog Rum Bar has been expanded into the two-story RedFrog Tiki Bar on Mardi Gras.

Don’t miss the incredible views at The Watering Hole in the Summer Landing Zone, and stop by the Heroes Tribute Bar & Lounge while you’re in that area, too. Carnival will donate a portion of the sale to benefit Operation Homefront when you purchase a specialty cocktail or beer in a souvenir glass.

9. Eat some burgers at Guy’s Burger Joint

A restaurant on the Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship with a red and yellow theme.
Guy’s Burger Joint on Mardi Gras

Guy’s Burger Joint on Deck 17 is Fieri’s first Carnival Cruise Line dining venue, and it’s as popular as ever on Mardi Gras. It serves the same handcrafted burgers and fries we all love.

Not only is the Guy’s Burger Joint on this ship the largest at sea, but its also free.

Barbecue lovers should head down to Deck 8 for excellent smoked meats, comfort food sides, and a home-brewed beer at Guy Fieri’s other restaurant, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse. All meals at Guy’s Pig & Anchor are currently free of charge on Mardi Gras.

10. Enjoy a meal at Big Chicken

The much-awaited Big Chicken restaurant launched on Mardi Gras, and it’s already a huge hit.

Created by Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal, Big Chicken offers a wide array of tasty chicken sandwiches, chicken strips, and even a fried chicken basket. It’s also the first Big Chicken on a cruise ship.

Guests can choose from white or dark meat (grilled chicken available on request), and items can be ordered with fries and sides like jalapeño slaw, potato salad, and sweet and spicy pickles.

Big Chicken also offers a large toppings bar and, as the restaurant’s sign says, “We Encourage Sauciness.” Sauces include Shaq sauce, barbecue, buttermilk ranch, and buffalo hot sauce.

Big Chicken is open for lunch and dinner; breakfast is served until 3 p.m. daily. Make sure to try the breakfast biscuits – they’re delicious.

The innovative three-deck-high Grand Central Atrium space is one of Carnival Mardi Gras’ six themed zones – and it’s a winner.

The atrium’s huge 3,000 square-foot glass panels built into the ship’s side provide guests with beautiful sea views. It’s a wonderful place to relax, listen to live music, or participate in games and contests.

At night, the Grand Central Atrium transforms into a multi-story venue for spectacular shows with talented performances, aerial acrobatics, and special effects. The Grand Central Atrium’s 16 massive LED screens can display videos, lasers, and other unique effects – providing an ever-changing backdrop.

Don’t miss the ship’s New Orleans Celebration with its Mardi Gras-style parade and incredible “Voodoo Moon” performance. It’s one of the most fantastic entertainment experiences I’ve seen at sea.

12. Dine at Chef’s Table

Chef's Table Carnival Mardi Gras
Chef’s Table

Foodies rave about the Chef’s Table on Mardi Gras. At $119 per person (as of March 2024), this small group multi-course dining experience is a splurge – but it’s a VIP experience for just 14 guests hosted by the Master Executive Chef.

The Chef’s Table features cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a unique menu of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. It has its own space on Deck 5 Aft.

Guests must be at least 12 years of age or older to participate. Since limited seating is available, make your reservations as early as possible.

13. Eat a freshly-made pizza at Pizzeria del Capitano

Pizzeria del Capitano Carnival Mardi Gras
Pizzeria del Capitano

Located in the La Piazza zone on Carnival Mardi Gras, Pizzeria del Capitano serves fantastic freshly-made pizza 20 hours a day.

(Note: The pizza place was open 24 hours per day until the decision was made to reduce the hours in 2022.)

Different hand-tossed thin-crust pies are available, including:

  • Margherita,
  • Funghi (mushroom)
  • Pepperoni
  • Quattro Formaggi (four cheese)
  • Prosciutto.
  • Guests can also request a gluten-free pie or a Caesar salad.

Piazza Panini is located within the La Piazza area, and a counter-service sandwich shop is open until 10 p.m., nightly.

Guests can order classic deli sandwiches, including Reubens and meatball subs, delicious paninis such as a Caprese panini (served hot or cold), or meat-lovers varieties like Carne or Salumeria. Yummy desserts are available after 8 p.m. daily.

Best of all, both Pizzeria del Capitano and Piazza Panini are free.

14. Eat cheesesteak fries at Street Eats on Carnival Mardi Gras

Street Eat Fries Carnival Mardi Gras
Street Eat Fries

Street Eats is a new dining concept in Carnival Cruise Line, located on Lido Deck 16 around Mardi Gras’ Beach Pool area. Inspired by food trucks and street eateries, Street Eats consists of three open-air counter-service stalls — Steam Dream, Mad Sizzle, and Time Fries.

Steam Dream serves delicious bao buns and potstickers, while Mad Sizzle features kebabs and satays. Time Fries features chef-created french fries loaded with toppings, such as Cheesesteak Fries.

Street Eats is free of charge and open for lunch. The menus change constantly throughout the week so drop by there every day.

If you like these kinds of food stalls, don’t miss having lobster rolls at the Seafood Shack (available for an extra charge) and the free shawarma station and hot dog stations in the Lido Marketplace. The Lido’s free gelato is also a big hit among kids and adults.

15. See a Family Feud Live

It’s fitting that Carnival’s Fun Ship should also feature an exciting new game show. Family Feud™ Live launched on Mardi Gras, and it had a packed house on our cruise.

The set is exactly like the one you’ve seen on the iconic TV game show. Our cruise director and teams participating in Family Feud™ Live on our sailing made the entertainment experience fast-paced and fun.

16. Enjoy Chinese cuisine at Chibang!

This unique restaurant that combines Chinese and Mexican cuisines is another first for Carnival Cruise Line. Located on Deck 8, Chibang! is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I didn’t expect to be wowed by this restaurant, but we ended up eating here twice on our cruise.

The lunch menu consists of build-your-own bowls, while dinner is a multi-course affair offering Chinese and Mexican selections.

Guests can mix and match from both sides of the menu, with choices like Sweet and sour Shrimp, Kung Pao Chicken, Steak Ranchero, and Pescado Frito.

Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse is a superb dining experience on this cruise ship, and making reservations early is important. This upscale specialty restaurant is located on Deck 7 and carries a surcharge of $49 per person for a superb four-course meal, which is well worth the cost.

Starters include Baked Onion Soup, Lobster Bisque, Smoked Fresh Oysters, and Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, followed by a good choice of salads.

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its outstanding Punchliner Comedy Club and is incredibly popular on Mardi Gras. The ship features both family-friendly and adult-only shows.

Waiting lines formed well before showtimes, with multiple shows offered daily. Many guests in our group planned their evenings around The Punchliner Comedy Club shows throughout the cruise.

20. Relax in Serenity or Loft 19

Mardi Gras Loft 19
Loft 19

The adults-only Serenity Retreat on Mardi Gras is a lovely oasis with a pool, whirlpool, padded loungers, clamshell chairs, the Serenity Bar, and a Fresh Creations salad station. It’s a peaceful spot to chill out with friends.

Located one deck above, Loft 19 is yet another first for a Carnival cruise ship, and it’s a quiet space designed for privacy and relaxing.

Guests staying in Excel Suites on Carnival Mardi Gras have complimentary access to the exclusive Loft 19 area for their entire cruise and priority for cabana rentals.

Loft 19 features plush lounge chairs and a large infinity whirlpool, but the area’s 12 five-person cabanas must be rented for an additional fee from $500 per day to $3,000 per week.

Other Mardi Gras guests can purchase loft 19 access if a cabana is available.

While the Serenity and Serenity Bar area is for guests ages 21 and older, kids are welcome in Loft 19 with proper access.

21. Pay a visit to Cloud 9 Spa Thermal Suite

Getting a Cloud 9 thermal suite pass for the day or week is the ultimate way to spend the day if you don’t want to get off the ship. There is a mineral pool, heated tile loungers, steam and dry heat chambers, and rainfall showers to wash your stress away.

This area is capacity controlled, meaning they only sell a certain amount of passes per week until it is declared sold out. The Cloud 9 Thermal Suite prices could vary by sailing, so expect to pay anywhere from $30 for a day pass, up to $149 for the entire week.

22. Experience Mardi Gras Theater’s Playlist Productions

Playlist Productions

Though small considering the size of the shop, with a maximum capacity of 900 people, Mardi Gras Theater offers more than just the Family Feud game show.

The theater offers full-scale musical shows (Playlist Productions) that bring your favorite tunes to life with talented singers and dancers.

With themes from 80s pop, jazz, Latin rhythms, and piano-pounding arena rock, you’ll find a production that suits your taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Carnival Mardi Gras sail from?

Carnival Mardi Gras sets sail from Terminal 3 at Port Canaveral in Central Florida. The port has a brand-new cruise terminal built specifically for Mardi Gras.

Port Canaveral is a world-class cruise and cargo port voted as the best North American Homeport. It’s the fastest-growing cruise port in Florida.

Is Mardi Gras the biggest Carnival cruise ship?

No. The biggest Carnival cruise ship is Carnival Jubilee, followed by Carnival Celebration and then Mardi Gras.

What are the cons of Carnival Mardi Gras?

The main con is that some areas are too small for the number of guests on the ship, especially the Mardi Gras theater, Punchliner comedy club, and the limelight lounge. The entertainment department tries to alleviate this by presenting multiple shows around the ship simultaneously.

From gorgeous beaches to thrilling adventures, fascinating history, exotic wildlife, serene relaxation, and endless fun, Jamaica has something to offer everyone.

Popular Jamaica Cruise Ports

  • Montego Bay
  • Ocho Rios
  • Falmouth

If you’re wondering what to do while your ship is docked in Jamaica, here are the top 10 activities and adventures for cruise passengers visiting Jamaica:

Swim with Dolphins

(GOLDEN EYE/JAMAICA)

Get up close and personal with dolphins (and even snorkel with sharks) at Jamaica’s number one marine attraction, Dolphin Cove.

Cruisers can interact and swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Cove Ocho Rios. As part of their entrance fee, visitors can take out their mini boats to explore the coast, snorkel and interact with stingrays, take a glass-bottom kayak ride, and interact with exotic snakes, birds, and iguanas on the Jungle Trail.

Dolphin Cove Negril may be your closest option if your ship is docked in Montego Bay. Here, passengers can experience the same fantastic dolphin experiences at this 20-acre property, the largest natural dolphin lagoon in the world.

Take a Bobsled Run

The cool bobsled ride at Mystic Mountain in Ocho Rios is one of Jamaica’s hottest attractions. Here’s your chance to star in your Cool Runnings movie and hurtle along on steel rails 1,000 meters through the forest.

Although gravity drives this bobsled ride, you can control your speed by maneuvering your handlebars. Parents who want to manage their child’s experience can have two bobsleds connected.

Fly through the Canopy

Cruise passengers visiting Jamaica have multiple choices for zipline and sky trek adventures. Take the Original Canopy Tour, a two-hour zipline experience that will send you soaring through the treetops.

Cruisers near the Rose Hall Great House can take Chukka Caribbean’s exciting Flight of the White Witch zipline canopy tour.

Ziplines traverse a densely forested canyon about 1200 feet above sea level. Guests will also rappel 100 feet from Annie’s Web, a gravity-defying suspended platform high above the forest floor. Mystic Mountain offers a zipline tour and a sky trek experience.

Go Rafting on a River

A person in a hat sits on a bamboo raft, photographing the surroundings, while a guide steers the raft along a forested river.

Treat yourself to a rafting trip experience unlike any other — journey down the Martha Brae River on 30-foot-long bamboo rafts built for two.

Located about three miles inland from the port of Falmouth, this river rafting tour was started over forty years ago and is the leading rafting excursion in Jamaica. Many famous individuals and celebrities, including Queen Elizabeth II, Chuck Norris, Spike Lee, and Jane Seymour, have taken this trip.

As families glide along the three-mile stretch of water, they’ll learn about the “Legend of Martha Brae” and have the opportunity to swim. Jamaica’s rivers are a delight.

If tubing is more your style, take a shore excursion to Jamaica’s White River and enjoy the fun. Kayaking safaris are available on Jamaica’s Great River as well.

Get Wet in the Waterfalls

Dunn’s River Falls is one of Jamaica’s most famous tour attractions. Take a guided climb over 600 feet up to the top of the falls – a great bonding activity.

Wear water shoes with good treads for the best experience. Those who don’t wish to make the climb can view the human chain ascending the falls from a series of observation decks.

There’s a nice beach below the falls for swimming and playing before or after your climb.

Trips to Dunn’s River Falls are often combined with other activities on shore excursions, such as river tubing, catamaran sails, dolphin swims, bobsled or dogsled rides, zipline adventures, and more.

For even more exciting waterfall adventures, check out YS Falls, a set of seven spectacular tiered waterfalls and over-the-water zipline adventures in Jamaica’s Cockpit Country.

Hit Some Balls

An aerial view of a lush, green golf course by a calm, blue ocean under a partly cloudy sky, with a white building to the left and sand bunkers near the water.

Golf lovers visiting Jamaica will find some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful and challenging courses.

As part of their ship’s cruise experience – or even on an independent tour – cruisers can arrange to play Jamaica’s famous Half Moon Course, consistently ranked as one of the top golf courses in the world.

This breathtaking Par-72 Robert Trent Jones, Sr. course has hosted several prestigious tournaments, including the Dunhill Cup Final of the Americas and the Jamaica Open Golf Championship.

Other popular courses for cruise passengers are the Sandals Golf & Country Club and the Breezes Resort’s course in Runaway Bay.

See the Wildlife

Go “under da sea” in an air-conditioned semi-sub reef explorer and learn about the fascinating marine life found in Montego Bay Marine Park – or snorkeling on one of Jamaica’s many catamaran boat trips to see loads of bright corals and tropical fish.

If your ship docks in Montego Bay or Falmouth, you may have the opportunity to take a scenic boat safari up the Black River, where wild crocodiles can often be seen swimming through the water and sunning along the banks.

Your guide will introduce you to these fascinating creatures; you could even be lucky to touch one if you dare!

Live the Legends

Colorful tapestries and flags hang next to a thatched hut on a sandy beach with turquoise water and a clear blue sky in the background.

Visiting Nine Mile, the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley, is the equivalent of a Graceland pilgrimage for many fans. Cruise passengers can journey to this quaint mountain village to learn about Bob Marley’s life, see his home, and visit his final resting place.

Several variations of this tour are offered, sometimes with a stop at Jamaica’s lush Fern Gully – home to over 200 different species of ferns, for those seeking a different type of legend, a trip to Rose Hall, Jamaica’s most famous Great House.

Built in the 1770s and immaculately restored, this Georgian mansion was the home of Annie Palmer, also known as the “White Witch of Rose Hall.” Visitors can walk through the rooms where Annie is said to have killed her three husbands – areas she is said to haunt to this day.

Go on a Camel Safari

A group of camels stand closely together, some looking at the camera. They have thick, brown and white fur.

Take a ride atop a camel at Prospect Plantation, a privately owned 1000-acre 18th-century working agricultural estate. The plantation is an interesting stop for cruise passengers, allowing them to see locally grown crops and taste freshly cut coconut. Guests can feed the ostriches as well.

Once at the Camel Park, visitors will get a brief orientation to the camels and have the opportunity to ride and pose with these exotic creatures. Children must be at least eight to participate, and a paying adult must accompany kids 8-12.

Saddle Up

A group of people in blue life vests riding horses through waist-deep water on a sunny day.

Enjoy a leisurely trail ride through Jamaica’s lush rural areas, then head along the beach and into the sea to cool off. This popular tour from Chukka Caribbean takes cruise passengers on a trail ride through Jamaica’s countryside and to old sugar plantation estates.

After riding through these areas, the horses will come to Chukka’s beach, where riders (and their horses) can swim in the sea. Children must be at least 6 to participate in this tour. If horseback riding isn’t your thing, consider a Jamaican dogsled ride instead – without the snow!

Of course, any list of what to do in Jamaica wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the beaches. Jamaica’s beautiful beaches are one of the major reasons why cruise passengers visit this tropical island repeatedly.

While Negril’s stunning white strand is legendary, other popular beaches include Runaway Bay, Mahogany Beach, Oracabessa, and James Bond Beach.

Ocho Rios jamaica

Shopping, bar-hopping, and garden tours are some of my favorite options for doing something more low-key in Jamaica.

Margaritaville in Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are both popular with cruise passengers – and there’s one in Negril, too. Wassi Art Pottery Works and Harmony Hall are great places for locally-made pottery and arts & crafts.

Cruise passengers also enjoy touring the gardens at Shaw Park and Coyaba, visiting the rainforest at Fern Gully, and touring the 18th-century Good Hope great house.

You can visit the Jamaica Tourism Board website for more things to do while visiting.

Best Alaska Glacier Cruises Explained: All You Need To Know https://cruiseradio.net/alaska-glacier-cruises-explained-all-you-need-to-know/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 03:28:21 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=141472 Alaska cruises are filled with spectacular scenery and memorable experiences. Sought-after views of Alaska’s icy blue glaciers are always some of the most anticipated sights. Determining which voyages have the best glacier views is often a key factor in choosing a cruise to America’s 49th state.

Since several Alaska cruise destinations include the word “glacier” in their description, deciding which Alaska itinerary is the best option can often be tough.

Suppose you’re trying to decide which cruise itinerary is the best Alaska glacier cruise for your trip to the Last Frontier.

In that case, we have the information you need to help sort through your choices and pick the Alaska glacier voyage for you.

Best Alaska Glacier Cruises

Ask many Alaska cruise aficionados how to select the best Alaska glacier cruise, and they’ll tell you to pick an Alaska voyage that includes Glacier Bay National Park. Since access to Glacier Bay is tightly controlled, only a limited number of cruise ships can visit Glacier Bay National Park each season.

Spending a day in Glacier Bay is a must for an Alaska cruise, whether it’s your first time visiting Alaska or your tenth voyage there.

Glacier Bay itineraries are always one of the most popular Alaska cruise routes. Glacier Bay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its magnificent glaciers and incredible wilderness scenery. Cruise ships visiting Glacier Bay typically spend nearly a full day there.

The 3.3 million-acre park is home to many glaciers enveloping close to a third of its land. Cruise guests can see multiple glaciers sailing through Glacier Bay National Park.

In addition to glaciers, visitors to Glacier Bay will marvel at the area’s snow-covered mountain peaks, fjords, waterfalls, forests, and wildlife.

Glacier Bay cruises are often considered the best Alaska glacier itineraries because they offer views of multiple glaciers, spectacular mountain vistas, and frequent wildlife sightings.

Marine wildlife is plentiful in Glacier Bay, so cruise visitors often see humpback whales, orca whales, harbor seals, porpoises, otters, and sea lions.

It’s also possible to spot bears, moose, mountain goats, and deer on land. Interpretive park rangers come onboard each cruise ship while vessels are in Glacier Bay National Park, and they often point out wildlife and other interesting sights during their talks.

You might see bald eagles flying overhead or a brown bear swimming across the bay.

In Glacier Bay, the glaciers are typically the stars of the show. Cruise ships spend much of their time sailing past several of the park’s active tidewater glaciers — the kind of glacier that breaks off massive icebergs that plunge into the sea.

This “calving” action is what many cruise passengers hope to see when they spend time in front of Alaska’s glaciers. The thunderous cracking sound of a calving glacier followed by the colossal crash as the iceberg splashes into the sea is something that Alaska cruise passengers remember forever.

Ships generally cruise through Glacier Bay, exploring its inlets and sailing past various glaciers. These include Johns Hopkins Glacier, Lamplugh Glacier, Grand Pacific Glacier, and Margerie Glacier.

It’s common for ships to spend an hour or so in front of one of the glaciers so guests can possibly see multiple calvings. Many sailings visit the mile-wide Margerie Glacier, an advancing tidewater glacier that frequently calves.

You’ll want to look into your ship’s schedule for your day in Glacier Bay and check out the best spots for unobstructed glacier views. Determining which ships go to Glacier Bay is important in choosing the best Alaska glacier cruise.

Holland America Line and Princess Cruises have many Alaska sailings that go to Glacier Bay, offering various itineraries, including ports such as Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Sitka.

Other cruise lines such as Alaskan Dream Cruises, American Cruise Lines, Cunard Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and UnCruise Adventures also offer cruises that visit Glacier Bay

While most of these cruises generally include close to a full day in Glacier Bay National Park, several UnCruise Adventures Alaska itineraries feature two full days in Glacier Bay.

To sum up, here are some of the many advantages of sailing through Glacier Bay on your Alaska cruise:

  • Cruise ships typically spend 9-10 hours in Glacier Bay National Park
  • Glacier Bay National Park includes eleven glaciers — eight can be seen on clear days
  • Sailing through Glacier Bay includes traveling through inlets and beautiful scenery
  • More wildlife is often seen in Glacier Bay National Park
  • Park rangers come onboard to offer insights and narrate the trip while in Glacier Bay
  • Kids can earn Glacier Bay Junior Ranger badges while sailing in the National Park
  • Weather can be a safe bet, particularly early and late in the season

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay

For those searching for the best Alaska glacier cruise, one of the most common questions is, “Which one is best — Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay?”

Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay are both beautiful but have different experiences. Hubbard Glacier is not in Glacier Bay National Park. The glacier is located north of Glacier Bay National Park at the tip of Disenchantment Bay, inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.

hubbard glacier pixabay

Cruise itineraries that do not include Glacier Bay often include Hubbard Glacier instead. Reaching the height of more than a 30-story building above the waterline, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America.

This glacier’s massive size dwarfs cruise ships. Hubbard Glacier is also known to be one of the most rapidly advancing glaciers, moving as much as multiple feet per day. Unlike many other glaciers, Hubbard Glacier continues to thicken.

With a terminal face that’s about seven miles wide, Hubbard Glacier has been nicknamed the “Galloping Glacier” due to the rapid forward movement of this river of ice. Hubbard Glacier is also renowned for its strong blue color on clear days.

Since Hubbard Glacier is advancing quickly, its movement results in plenty of calving. Cruise guests watch in awe as huge multi-story chunks of ice fall into the sea with a thunderous boom. Some have reported seeing this happen three to four times in an hour.

Glacier calving in Alaska

Visitors cruising through Disenchantment Bay can also view nine of North America’s sixteen tallest mountain peaks on their way to Hubbard Glacier if the weather is favorable. Some cruise lines also offer optional small boat excursions that can get you closer to Hubbard Glacier.

While Hubbard Glacier is magnificent, there can be some downsides to choosing this itinerary. Since Hubbard Glacier can be the only major glacier on some Alaska cruises, if the weather isn’t favorable, there is a chance that passengers won’t get close-up views of any glaciers at all on their cruise.

Hubbard Glacier can be difficult to reach at certain times due to ice, fog, or other bad weather conditions. Weather in Glacier Bay tends to be more reliable, although it can sometimes be rainy.

Finding a cruise itinerary that visits Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier would be the best of both worlds, but typically, Alaska cruisers have to choose between the two. Here are some comparisons between visiting Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay.

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay Advantages:

  • Hubbard Glacier is taller and more massive than the glaciers in Glacier Bay
  • Calving occurs more frequently at Hubbard Glacier than at glaciers in Glacier Bay
  • Hubbard Glacier’s calving tends to be more spectacular, with huge multi-story icebergs
  • Ships can sometimes get slightly closer to Hubbard Glacier than those in Glacier Bay
  • Sailing to Hubbard Glacier includes views of some of North America’s tallest mountains
  • On clear days, the color of Hubbard Glacier is very blue

Hubbard Glacier vs. Glacier Bay Disadvantages:

  • Ships typically spend most of the day in Glacier Bay — Hubbard Glacier is a shorter visit
  • Glacier Bay includes multiple glaciers, while Hubbard Glacier itineraries include only one
  • More wildlife is often seen in Glacier Bay National Park
  • Glacier Bay’s spectacular scenery is more varied
  • Park rangers come onboard to offer insights and narrate the trip while in Glacier Bay
  • Weather in Glacier Bay can be a safer bet, particularly early and late in the season

Glacier Bay National Park vs. Tracy Arm Fjord

Sawyer Glacier (Photo courtesy of Nancy Schretter)

Tracy Arm Fjord is another breathtakingly beautiful area that’s often included on Alaska cruise itineraries. Tracy Arm Fjord is part of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, including nearby Endicott Arm Fjord.

Located south of Juneau, Tracy Arm is a long, relatively narrow fjord ending at the two stunning faces of Sawyer Glacier — North Sawyer Glacier and South Sawyer Glacier.

These twin glaciers often produce deep blue icebergs, and sometimes well over a hundred seals can be seen hauled out on the large glacial ice floes — particularly in June.

Sawyer Glacier is an active tidewater glacier. Ships travel up Tracy Arm Fjord, navigating the long channel and tight turns. On the scenic journey through Tracy Arm Fjord, cruise guests will marvel at the sheer, steep walls of the deep fjord and the area’s scenic beauty.

Tracy Arm Fjord
(Photo via Uncruise Adventures)

Tracy Arm Fjord is less than a half-mile wide, and waterfalls often cascade down the fjord’s craggy cliffs. Mountain goats can sometimes be seen near Sawyer Glacier, and bears are occasionally spotted near the water’s edge.

Sailing through Tracy Arm Fjord is one of the highlights of this experience, particularly on a smaller ship. Large cruise ships often offer small boat tours of Tracy Arm Fjord on itineraries featuring a full day in the port in Juneau.

These tours are highly recommended, as the smaller excursion boats can get much closer at Sawyer Glacier, and calving can be more easily seen.

waterfall in tracy arm fjord alaska

With these Tracy Arm Fjord excursions, avid glacier seekers may have the option of visiting this stunning area in addition to Hubbard Glacier or Glacier National Park.

If weather or sailing conditions make it difficult to navigate Tracy Arm, ships and excursion boats sometimes choose to go up Endicott Arm to visit Dawes Glacier instead.

If you’re trying to decide between an Alaska cruise that visits Glacier Bay and one that only includes Tracy Arm Fjord, here are some pros and cons.

Tracy Arm Fjord vs. Glacier Bay Advantages:

  • It was a spectacularly memorable sailing experience navigating through Tracy Arm’s narrow fjord
  • Plenty of strikingly blue icebergs and stunning waterfalls
  • Can have more seals hauled out on ice floes, depending upon the time of year
  • You can sometimes get closer to Sawyer Glacier if on a smaller excursion boat

Tracy Arm Fjord vs. Glacier Bay Disadvantages:

  • Tracy Arm is smaller than Glacier Bay, with only one fjord to explore
  • Not as many glaciers as Glacier Bay
  • Ice may sometimes block large ships from getting far enough in to see the twin glaciers
  • Glacier Bay is a full-day experience, while Tracy Arm is generally 4-5 hours
  • Weather in Glacier Bay is often more favorable than in Tracy Arm Fjord

Hubbard Glacier vs. Sawyer Glacier

Comparing Hubbard Glacier with Sawyer Glacier is easy when it comes to size. As the largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier’s towering height and mammoth overall size are much more impressive than Sawyer Glacier. Calving at Hubbard Glacier can be more astounding and frequent as well.

Visits to Sawyer Glacier are memorable in their own right, however. Sailing through narrow Tracy Arm Fjord is truly spectacular, particularly when the weather is clear. Wildlife, including harbor seals, mountain goats, bears, and bald eagles, are often seen during the trip.

Since Sawyer Glacier is an active tidewater glacier, calving does occur regularly. Since the glacier extends hundreds of feet under the water, underwater calving also occurs with giant blue icebergs the size of submarines shooting to the surface.

sawyer glacier alaska

Suppose your Hubbard Glacier Alaska cruise itinerary includes a full port day in Juneau. In that case, it may be possible to visit Tracy Arm Fjord and Sawyer Glacier on a small boat excursion. If that’s not the case and you must choose between Hubbard Glacier or Sawyer Glacier, here are some pros and cons.

Sawyer Glacier vs. Hubbard Glacier Advantages:

  • Sailing through Tracy Arm’s narrow fjord is particularly memorable
  • Can have more seals hauled out on ice floes, depending upon the time of year
  • Breathtaking scenery in Tracy Arm can include snowy peaks and stunning waterfalls
  • Often, more wildlife is seen in Tracy Arm, including mountain goats, bears, and bald eagles

Sawyer Glacier vs. Hubbard Glacier Disadvantages:

  • Hubbard Glacier is significantly larger and more impressive than Sawyer Glacier
  • Calving is particularly awe-inspiring at Hubbard Glacier and can occur more frequently
  • Sailing to Hubbard Glacier includes views of some of North America’s tallest mountains
  • Ships may have trouble reaching Sawyer Glacier due to weather and ice conditions

Additional Alaska Glacier Cruises

In addition to all these choices, additional glacier viewing options exist for travelers seeking the best Alaska glacier cruise. Some cruise lines  include Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier on their Alaska cruise itineraries.

Located southeast of Juneau, Endicott Arm Fjord is part of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness area. Sailing through Endicott Arm Fjord to Dawes Glacier is a somewhat similar experience to navigating up Tracy Arm Fjord.

While sailing through Endicott Arm Fjord, waterfalls and various wildlife, including harbor seals, mountain goats, and bears, can often be seen.

College Fjord is another spectacular area that’s sometimes included on northbound Alaska cruise itineraries. Located in the northern area of Prince William Sound, College Fjord contains five tidewater glaciers, five valley glaciers, and several smaller glaciers.

Many of these glaciers are named after well-known East Coast colleges and universities, including Harvard Glacier, Yale Glacier, Amherst Glacier, Wellesley Glacier, and Williams Glacier. Additional glaciers are also located nearby.

Visiting Mendenhall Glacier is a popular excursion for Alaska cruise guests spending the day in Juneau. These Mendenhall Glacier tours can also include other active adventures such as kayaking, canoeing, and glacier hikes.

Flightseeing trips and glacier dogsledding tours are other exciting ways to experience Alaska’s glaciers. Some of the best Alaska glacier cruises sail from Seattle or Vancouver or start in North Alaska and sail south.

12 Key Tips For Great Car Rental Deals https://cruiseradio.net/money-saving-car-rental-vacation-tips/ Wed, 09 Jun 2021 17:22:31 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=142609 Rental cars are often popular options for shuttling between Florida’s airports and cruise ports, taking pre- and post-cruise road trips, and exploring destinations on independent shore excursions.

If you’re planning on booking a rental vehicle for your next cruise vacation, however, you need to be aware of what’s going on with car rentals this year. Many airports and vacation spots throughout the United States are experiencing a massive car rental shortage, sending rental vehicle rates sky-high.

Why Are Car Rentals So Expensive?

A number of factors have contributed to the current rental car situation. Travel plummeted last year, causing a number of car rental companies to sell off large percentages of their rental vehicle fleets to survive.

Now that travel has started to return in a big way, however, there are fewer rental cars available to book.

Rental companies are currently trying to add cars to their fleets to replace the vehicles they sold, but it’s hard for them to buy new vehicles due to a crippling global semiconductor chip shortage that could last through 2022. High-quality used cars are in short supply as well.

The country’s car rental shortage has increased in severity since mid-February. Rental vehicles are already completely sold out in some destinations during prime summer weeks and rates can be astronomical. There is a significant rental car shortage in Alaska cities like Anchorage and Fairbanks during peak summer periods, with many weeks already sold out. If you’re planning to rent a car at the airport in Orlando or Miami, you’ll likely pay hundreds of dollars more than usual as well.

Whether it’s your first time using a car rental agency or you’re planning to rent a vehicle for your next cruise, here are twelve tips to help you get a rental car for your cruise and find the best deal possible:

1. Book Your Car Rental Far In Advance.

Given the current supply disruption in rental cars, it is a good idea to make car rental reservations as soon as you have travel dates for your cruise. Last-minute car rates can be insanely expensive and it’s possible that cars might not be available at the last minute at all.

A number of travel experts suggest making a duplicate back-up car booking in case your vehicle isn’t available when you arrive due to delayed returns. If you decide to make a back-up reservation, make sure to cancel it if it’s not needed.

It’s also key to pack plenty of patience when renting cars this year. Rental agencies are often short-staffed, particularly if you plan to rent a car at an airport location.

Waiting times at the rental counter to pick up cars at airports can be long during peak periods, so allow additional time for rental car pick-ups and drop-offs or make arrangements for skip-the-line car rental options.

2. Verify Car Rental Rates Before Finalizing Travel Arrangements.

car vehicle road

If you’re flying to your cruise and need a rental vehicle, check out rental car rates before finalizing your travel arrangements and consider alternative airports if needed.

You might find significantly lower rates and better availability at another airport that will still work for your vacation itinerary, even if it means adding more miles to your trip.

It’s also a good idea to check to see if your airline provides the option to add a rental car when making reservations if you need one, since bundling can sometimes result in lower costs.

Travel advisors are an excellent source of information and can help with identifying additional alternatives, too.

3. Consider Non-Airport Car Rental Locations.

When researching car rental options, expand your search beyond airport locations. While renting at an airport location is convenient, there are usually additional rental sites within a few miles of the airport that may offer better deals.

Choosing a city vicinity search rather than an airport search can reduce the weekly rate by as much as 30 to 40 percent in some locations, yielding savings of several hundred dollars during peak rental periods.

Non-airport car rental offices may have a greater supply of vehicles as well. Some non-airport car rental locations also offer shuttle services to the airport, cruise ports, and local hotels.

4. Join Rental Car Loyalty Programs.

Signing up for car rental loyalty programs like Avis Preferred, Budget Fastbreak, Hertz Gold Plus, and National Emerald Club can deliver great perks like free upgrades, skipping the lines at rental car counters, no fees for additional drivers, and choosing your own vehicle on the lot at most airports.

Some travel credit cards offer free membership in premium rental car loyalty programs, providing even more exclusive perks like elite status and rewards.

If you have your own business, consider applying for a corporate account that can yield better deals and lower rates. Some companies may allow their employees to utilize their corporate rates for personal trips as well.

Certain websites can be helpful in quickly pinpointing availability and finding the best rental company rates. AutoSlash has been delivering some of the lowest rates in popular vacation destinations over the last few months.

AutoSlash completes an opaque search with multiple rental car companies and applies any discounts that travelers are entitled to due to memberships, coupons, and other factors. Recently, some AutoSlash searches have resulted in savings of hundreds of dollars when compared with other available alternatives.

In addition, check online booking sites such as Priceline, Hotwire, Expedia, Kayak, Momondo, Skyscanner, AutoRentals, and Rentalcars.

Also, look for rental vehicle coupon or discount codes on sites like RetailMeNot and Groupon.

6. Get Membership and Rewards Program Discounts.

Memberships and frequent flyer airline rewards programs can provide a lower rate. Costco has traditionally provided its members access to some of the most affordable rental car rates.

Options may be limited, so make sure to check rental car prices and availability as far in advance as possible.

Other great sources of membership discounts include AAA membership, AARP, BJs, and Sam’s Club. Frequent flyer airline programs including Delta Skymiles, United MileagePlus, American AAdvantage, JetBlue TrueBlue, and Southwest offer discounts with select rental car companies as well.

7. Check Your Credit Cards for Benefits.

Some credit cards offer car rental discounts, and they can provide additional savings as well. Credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, United Airlines cards, American Express cards, and others provide primary or secondary rental car collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss damage waiver (LDW) coverage that can help eliminate the need for additional rental insurance policies offered by rental car companies.

Select travel credit cards also offer opportunities to use points or miles to pay for part or all of your car rental, plus additional perks like discounts and free upgrades.

8. Avoid Car Rental Scams.

Con artists have found a way to cash in on the current skyrocketing cost of rental cars, tricking car rental shoppers into paying for phony car rentals. According to the Better Business Bureau, scammers are taking out online ads and impersonating rental car companies.

Scammers may use the names of major rental companies and online sites, or they may appear to be an independent car agency running a special promotion.

Here’s how the scam works. Travelers searching for car rentals online spot a link offering great rental car deals and call the number listed.

A representative from the fake car rental agency answers and says that they’re running a special promotion with a gift card or prepaid debit card company like American Express, so paying by phone in advance with one of those cards will yield a huge discount on the car rental costs.

Scam victims purchase the card and then share the PIN with the rental company’s customer service representative. They’re given a fake car rental confirmation number or are promised the car will be delivered, but never receive the vehicle because the rental car doesn’t exist.

To prevent falling for these car rental scams, use the phone numbers listed on well-known car rental companies’ websites and never make payments with gift cards or prepaid debit cards. Deals that sound too good to be true are often false, so verify any special promotional offers directly with the rental companies and be wary of sponsored links offering insanely cheap car rentals.

9. Continually Track Car Rental Rates.

Rental rates for vehicles are currently volatile, rising and falling depending on supply and demand. During this period of rental car shortages, car rental companies are regularly evaluating demand at locations around the country and moving around their fleets.

While cars may be in short supply when you make your advance reservation, rates may drop as you get closer to your rental date. If you’ve selected the “pay later” option, you can re-book your car rental at a lower price. Check rates continually or use the automatic rate tracker feature offered by sites like AutoSlash.

10. Lengthen Your Car Rental Period If Possible.

Rental car rates are often at their highest during peak summer and holiday periods. If you’re driving to your cruise or planning to spend time exploring before or after your sailing, renting a car for close to a week instead of a long weekend can reduce your daily rate, thereby lowering your costs.

In some cases, vacationers do not have to pay for the additional days if they aren’t used. Make sure to select the “pay later” rental option if you’re planning on doing this, though. It’s important to read your rental contract’s fine print to ensure that you won’t be charged a higher daily rate if you return your rental car early, too.

11. Consider Car Sharing and Other Car Rental Alternatives.

If rental cars are too costly or they’re sold out, take a look at available car-sharing programs like Turo. Turo works somewhat like Airbnb, letting travelers rent cars directly from private hosts.

Turo operates in a wide variety of locations and provides 24/7 customer support, contactless check-in options, flexible cancellation terms, and insurance protection plans.

If you only need a car for a few hours or days, take a look at Zipcar. Zipcar’s membership car-sharing service offers bookings by the hour or day in over 35 states as well as Canada and the United Kingdom. Additional car-sharing services include Enterprise CarShare and Getaround.

Given the current rental car shortage and often excessive rates, consider whether you really need to rent a car for your trip. Check out taxis, Uber, and Lyft, and consider using local tour companies for memorable experiences on your cruise. Some Toyota and Subaru car dealerships also rent cars in select locations.

12. Don’t Prepay for Gas in Your Rental Car.

To get a better deal on your car rental, avoid prepaying for a full take of gas. While car rental agents will urge you to take advantage of their prepaid gas program and sell you on a cheap per-gallon price, it’s rarely a good deal. You’ll be paying for a full tank of gas and in order to snag that quoted low price per gallon, the rental car will have to be returned with a totally empty gas tank which isn’t very likely.

You’ll want to check out Google Maps or Waze to find out where the closest gas stations are located. There are usually plenty of local gas stations near rental return places, and those gas stations may offer a cheaper price for fuel.

Apps like GasBuddy can help you find the cheapest gas and compare alternatives for purchasing gas for your car rental.

The only time prepaying for gas might be a good idea is for convenience – either you’ll be returning the car at times gas stations might not be open or you’ll worry too much about filling up your gas tank and the stress won’t be worth it. Evaluate the options and decide what’s best for you.

New Providence Island’s More Remote Beaches: While Nassau and Paradise Island offer a number of beautiful beaches, it’s often fun to explore more deserted and less-touristy strands on New Providence Island. Located some distance from Nassau, a few of these secluded spots include Love Beach, Coral Harbour Beach, Caves Beach, Yamacraw Hill Beach, and Adelaide Beach.

People-to-People Program: The Bahamas offers a variety of opportunities to connect with locals through their People-to-People program. First Time Travel Tips

Here are a few tips for first-time visitors to Nassau, Bahamas:

  • Bahamians drive on the left-hand side of the road. It’s important to remember this and watch for cars when crossing the street.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert for your safety while walking in Nassau and Paradise Island, particularly at night. Like everywhere else in the world, it’s important to keep valuables hidden and keep an eye on possessions while at the beach or elsewhere. Marijuana is illegal here, so beware of individuals on the street offering to hook you up with a “smoke.”
  • It’s wise to only use officially licensed taxis when visiting Nassau and Paradise Island. Taxis are not metered, so make sure to discuss the price for your trip before getting into the cab.
  • Inexpensive local buses, called “jitneys,” operate in Nassau and New Providence Island. They can be a good option for affordable transportation.
  • Think twice about renting scooters in Nassau and Paradise Island. Traffic can be difficult to negotiate and numerous accidents involving vacationers have resulted. Taxis and local buses are safer choices.
  • If you’re shopping in Nassau, particularly at the Straw Market or even for tours from local vendors, make sure to negotiate.
  • Bottled water and snacks can be very expensive at resorts such as Atlantis and Baha Mar properties. Grocery stores are a much better bet for lower prices.

Pack for Alaska Cruise: Top 12 Items https://cruiseradio.net/what-to-pack-for-an-alaska-cruise-top-12-things-youll-need-for-the-last-frontier/ Thu, 18 Mar 2021 13:21:28 +0000 https://cruiseradio.net/?p=141254 Packing for an Alaska cruise can be challenging, even for highly experienced travelers. Alaska’s weather is difficult to predict and extremely changeable, making it possible to experience multiple seasons in a single week.

The Last Frontier is also a visual paradise filled with incredible wildlife and scenic wonders, so you’ll want to be bring along the right gear to capture the memories and get the most out of your trip. In addition, Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities. Being ready to take part in these exciting excursions requires careful consideration of what to take on an Alaskan cruise as well.

If you’re wondering what to pack for an Alaska cruise, here are twelve essential things to put on your Alaska cruise packing list:

1. Plenty of Layers

Deciding what to bring on an Alaska cruise is tough, especially when it comes to figuring out what clothes to pack. It’s smart to check the weather for each of your Alaska ports in advance, but don’t fully rely on that forecast when packing for an Alaska cruise. Alaska’s weather is unpredictable and can change drastically throughout your cruise – or even in a few hours, so it’s important to be prepared for all seasons. Bring lots of clothing that can be layered and easily added or removed as temperatures change during the day.

Your clothing needs will also vary substantially based on the shore excursions you choose. For an Alaska cruise, you’ll want to pack short and long sleeved t-shirts, light jackets, a fleece jacket, sweaters, a lightweight puffer or fleece vest, and a warm hat, scarf, and gloves. Base layers for men and women can help keep the cold out as well. Don’t forget to pack your swimsuit and polarized sunglasses, too.

Alaska’s summers can include a few stretches of warm days, so throw some shorts and lightweight hiking pants or convertible zip pants into your suitcase – particularly if you’re deciding what to pack for an Alaska cruise in July or August.

2. Packable Rain Gear

Alaska can get plenty of liquid sunshine during the spring and summer seasons, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Essentials for an Alaskan cruise include a good packable waterproof rain jacket with a hood, a packable windproof umbrella, and quick-dry men’s or women’s waterproof pants for kayaking and hiking. Make sure your rain jacket packs compactly into your backpack and that it’s large enough to fit layers and a fleece underneath for added weather protection.

Some travelers deciding what to pack for an Alaska cruise in May or September might want to bring along a 3-in-1 interchangeable jacket for added warmth in cold rainy weather.

3. Waterproof Hiking Shoes

Alaska’s terrain can be uneven and the ground can be muddy, so adventure-oriented shore excursions and activities often require shoes or boots with good treads. Bring a pair of comfortable men’s or women’s waterproof hiking shoes on your Alaska cruise along with several pairs of good socks in case one pair gets wet. Make sure to break in your hiking shoes well before your cruise to avoid blisters and other issues.

4. Outlet Adapter with USB Ports

Cruise ship staterooms usually have a very limited number of outlets and they’re never enough to charge all of the cell phones, camera battery chargers, computers, tablets, and other tech equipment Alaska cruise guests bring with them. When you’re considering what to bring on an Alaska cruise, make sure to pack a multi-outlet adapter with USB ports so you can easily charge everyone’s gear throughout the cruise.

5. Binoculars

There’s so much to see on an Alaska cruise, but some of Alaska’s most memorable sights aren’t always close by. Good waterproof binoculars can be essential for having the best views of Alaska’s wildlife and scenic wonders, particularly when watching from your stateroom balcony or the ship’s decks. If you’re lucky, you may even see a pod of humpback whales bubble-net feeding or a bear roaming along the shoreline.

6. Lightweight Backpack

Shore excursions in Alaska can involve lots of walking, hiking, and other activities. Add a lightweight waterproof backpack to your Alaskan cruise packing list to use on your days in port. You’ll need somewhere to store your gear, water bottle, raincoat, and any extra layers you may wish to put on or take off throughout the day.

7. Insect Repellant

Alaska’s mosquitoes are sometimes referred to as the “state bird,” and with good reason. The mosquitoes there are enormous and there can be plenty of them at times, so pack strong insect repellent to keep you protected during your Alaska cruise. Insect repellants with Picaridin are generally safe for the whole family, but some travelers may prefer to use DEET-based insect repellant.

While you’re packing for your Alaska cruise, make sure to bring along sunscreen with strong SPF protection for every member of your traveling crew as well. It’s wise to pack both insect repellant and sunscreen in well-sealed plastic storage bags to make sure they don’t leak onto your clothes.

8. Top-Notch Photography Gear

Humpback whales breach and spy hop quickly, so it’s much easier to get great pictures if you have a camera with a long lens and rapid shutter speed. A good digital SLR camera with a long lens is optimal for an Alaska cruise, but if you can’t bring one, a digital point and shoot camera with a long zoom lens is the next best option. Don’t rely solely on your cell phone for photos in Alaska since it won’t always yield the best pictures of humpback whales and calving glaciers, but some travelers like to optimize their phone cameras with extra lens attachments.

It’s important to protect your camera equipment from possible wet conditions, so add a waterproof dry bag and a waterproof phone carrying case to your Alaskan cruise packing list. In addition, bring plenty of digital camera memory cards, a hard drive to back up your pictures, extra batteries, and any other photo gear you might need. Camera supplies will be more expensive in Alaska than at home, and the selection can be limited as well.

9. Portable Chargers

Alaska’s scenic landscapes and experiences are extraordinary, so you’re likely to be taking lots of photos and videos on your Alaska cruise. Make sure to bring along portable chargers to take with you in port so you won’t run out of battery power while trying to capture pictures of Alaska’s incredible wildlife, dogsledding on a glacier, and other memorable moments. If you’re traveling with multiple family members, pack several portable chargers or a higher capacity portable charger for everyone to share.

10. Insulated Water Bottle

Alaska cruise vacations are quite activity-heavy, and it’s important to stay hydrated. A good reusable insulated water bottle is an essential item for your Alaskan cruise packing list. Fill it with fresh water and bring it along in port to help eliminate plastics and reduce waste while you travel.

11. Travel Alarm Clock

There’s so much to see and do on an Alaska cruise, so it’s likely you’ll want to be up early for scenic cruising and arrivals into Alaskan ports of call. Most ship staterooms don’t have a clock, so bring a travel alarm clock along on your Alaska cruise. While some people use their cell phone as an alarm clock, others prefer to leave their cell phone completely off while cruising. If you want to be extra sure to be up for an early shore excursion, you can request a wake-up call as well.

12. Motion Sickness Aids

Some Alaska cruise itineraries offer less risk of motion sickness, such as round-trip itineraries from Vancouver sailing through the Inside Passage’s more protected waters. Other Alaska sailings can spend multiple days on the open waters of the Pacific Ocean, which can be rough at times.

Over-the-counter drugs such as Bonine and Dramamine can be effective in preventing seasickness. These medications can cause drowsiness and some travelers may find one to be more effective than the other. Many seasoned cruise guests swear by wearable seasickness prevention remedies such as Transderm-Scop patches and Sea-Bands. Sea-Bands are easy to purchase, while Transderm-Scop patches must be obtained through your doctor.

Planning a Family Cruise

If you’re planning a family reunion cruise, it’s never too early to start the process. Planning your family reunion cruise at least 10-12 months in advance will allow family members to get excited and commit, coordinate their schedules, and begin saving money for their vacation. In addition, early advance planning will help your family access the best group rates, discounts, staterooms, and itinerary options for your family reunion cruise.

Start by choosing a group leader who can get things organized, communicate with your clan, keep track of deadlines, and be the key liaison person with outside contacts. Discuss budgets, best embarkation ports and cruise itineraries with the family as well.

It’s also wise to seek out a trusted travel advisor who can find the ideal family reunion cruise options to meet your group’s needs, secure the best deals and perks, book staterooms, keep track of deadlines, and help with special events and private room requests.

Onboard activities, specialty dining, and shore excursions are important parts of family reunion cruises. Book your favorite options early to ensure availability, optimal dining times and seating arrangements. Private tours and discounts on group shore excursions may be possible in some ports of call depending on the size of your group.

Cruises offer a wide array of activities allowing family members to have plenty of fun, both together and apart. Decide where to meet each day and set up a time for group photos to commemorate your trip.

You may want to create a family reunion cruise website or Facebook page to make communications easy. Encourage everyone to do online check-in and discuss how you plan to stay in touch while onboard the ship.

Today’s cruise ships offer extensive amenities and accommodation choices at all budget levels, allowing all family reunion guests to have a vacation they can afford while making great memories together.
