We have picked up several valuable tips to make booking and sailing with Royal Caribbean a breeze.

So, here are 12 things you need to know before you venture off on your maiden Royal Caribbean voyage:

1. They have Seven Classes of Ships

From the world’s largest class of cruise ships, the Icon class, to the fleet’s smaller Vision class, Royal Caribbean has vessels in all shapes and sizes.

The Royal Caribbean ships sail to various destinations all over the world.

That doesn’t mean, however, that every ship has the line’s signature restaurants, onboard entertainment, and amenities like rock climbing walls or the FlowRider surfing simulator.

So, it’s essential to review the different ship classes to find the right one for your next trip.

2. The Cruise Line Caters to Families

Most cruisers on Royal Caribbean ships will be families.

Families will have plenty of amenities to enjoy aboard a ship, including water parks like bumper cars (on Quantum-class ships) and a dedicated kids’ program known as Adventure Ocean.

If you plan on taking the little ones, register them for the program as soon as you board.

Additionally, most ships in the cruise line offer a Solarium, an adults-only retreat to let you escape from the rest of the families onboard.

3. You can Get the Best Rate by Booking in Advance

Royal Caribbean is constantly running promotions, but a good rule of thumb is to book your trip at least eight months in advance; that’s your best shot at getting the lowest fare, especially on the line’s largest and newest ships.

If the price drops within 48 hours of booking, you can call to get the lower rate.

We sometimes book a year or two in advance to take advantage of these lower prices.

Of course, if something comes up and you need to cancel, you can do so up until 75 days before sailing with no cancellation penalty.

4. Cruise Costs Depend on Cabin Type and Location

From interior rooms to multi-story suites, the cabin options available on many Royal Caribbean ships are as varied as the ships themselves.

The advertised low prices are most likely for inside cabins on the lower decks of a ship.

If you want to secure a cabin on a higher deck, perhaps one with an outside view or balcony, the per-person cruise fare will rise accordingly.

Don’t be surprised if selecting a different cabin category, especially if you opt for one of the suites onboard, increases your total cruise costs by more than double or triple.

5. You have a Few Main Dining Options

Royal Caribbean offers two dining options in the main dining room on most of its ships. With Traditional Dining, cruisers are assigned a specific table and eat simultaneously each night.

The same wait staff and table-mates are there to greet you during either early seating (usually around 6 p.m.) or late seating (around 8:30 p.m.).

With My Time Dining, you can make reservations to dine at a different time each night.

6. Not all Dining Options are Covered in the Cruise Fare

Like many cruise lines, Royal Caribbean ships offer a variety of complimentary dining, including casual spots, a buffet, and the main dining room.

Many of the line’s larger and newer ships also include several specialty restaurants.

These restaurants are not covered in your cruise fare. Most Royal Caribbean specialty restaurants charge a per-person, flat fee (generally between $25 to $55 a person), which includes a three-course meal with multiple starters and desserts.

7. There is a Digital Cruise Planner

Before you board the ship, you will want to use the Cruise Planner.

Whether you book directly with the cruise line or use a travel agent, you should set up an online account once you have a reservation number.

This online portal allows you to book shore excursions, dining, spa treatments, and other additional packages for most cruises.

You will also need to complete your pre-cruise check-in online, which will help save you time on embarkation day.

8. Some Entertainment Venues Require Reservations

On Royal’s larger ships, some entertainment venues require reservations. You can wait to reserve your spot onboard or reserve your pre-cruise selections.

We always book our entertainment online before cruising to ensure we never miss a show we want to see.

If your cruise ship includes shows requiring reservations, we highly recommend booking before you set sail, as preferred show times fill quickly.

For shows that do not require reservations, we advise getting to the venue about 30 minutes before the show starts.

9. Purchasing Pre-cruise Packages can Save you Money

Who doesn’t like to save money? With a Royal Caribbean cruise, you can save the most money by pre-paying for specific packages.

The cruise line regularly discounts items like beverage packages, internet packages, and even shore excursions if you book them beforehand.

By checking your online account routinely, you can score the greatest deal. If you purchase something and the price drops, call Royal Caribbean, and they may refund you the difference.

10. The Deluxe Beverage Package covers almost all drinks

Royal Caribbean has one alcohol package called the Deluxe Beverage Package. Onboard prices range from $56 to $115 a day, depending on your ship and trip, and the package covers most beers, cocktails, and wines by the glass up to $14.

The package also covers bottled water, soda, and specialty coffees and teas (but it does not cover drinks at Starbucks).

We usually buy this package and find it to be a good value. You will only pay the price difference if a drink costs more than the allotment.

A nonalcoholic package is also available, covering beverages like soda, specialty coffees, fresh-squeezed juices, and mocktails starting at $29 per day.

A soda package is available for $12.99 per day.

11. You should Use the Royal IQ App and the Internet

Royal Caribbean has some of the fastest internet at sea, especially now that the cruise line has implemented SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet on board.

If you want to stay connected to your social media and email and be able to browse the internet, we suggest purchasing one of the internet packages.

The plans are charged per day, and costs vary based on your surfing needs.

Even if you decide not to purchase an internet plan, you may download the Royal Caribbean app.

This app is free to use and lets you stay informed of what is happening throughout the cruise. In this app, you can see your scheduled reservations, make or change reservations, and view what occurs onboard each day.

12. The Cruise Compass is your Onboard Guide

The Compass includes a complete rundown of all onboard activities, entertainment, shopping, shows, and dining events that day. The digital version of the Compass is part of the Royal Caribbean app.

If you want a paper version, you’ll have to ask Guest Services or your cabin steward for one, as Royal Caribbean doesn’t automatically leave them in the stateroom each night anymore.

Either way, after walking off the cruise ship pier, you’ll be greeted by a lovely port area with shops, a few restaurants and bars, and a swimming pool—which means there’s a lot to do at this Caribbean port, including:

• Shopping

And while nothing compares to the fun you’ll have at the major shopping district in Cozumel, it’s still pleasant to walk around Costa Maya and enjoy what it has to offer.

Ship-organised tours assemble and board buses in this area. So if you’re on a privately-arranged tour, or want to take a taxi or bus to the nearby village of Mahahual, then you’ll need to head right outside the port gates.

With just a tiny bit of effort, you can spend the day in the beautiful beach town of Mahahual! 

The once fishing village now has a fun and laid-back promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and bars. So after leaving the port area, simply take the trolley bus or taxi (about $4 per person) for ten minutes south to the town.

Naturally, you’ll start feeling peckish after your trip – so stop by 40 Canones; a restaurant that happens to be a popular choice among cruisers! It offers delicious bites and a prime viewing spot right on the Caribbean Sea.

Patrons can relax in a lounge, order chocolate and drinks, like tequila, and spend the day relaxing in the beautiful sunshine.

A quick heads-up: 

This part of the Caribbean has a seasonal seaweed problem. We say seasonal because it happens to get worse during the warmer months – particularly from May to October. The good news is that locals do their best to keep it cleared away. 

That said, when you’ve had your share of this quaint village and are ready to return to the cruise ship (leave time for about an hour before departure!), simply get back on the trolley or hail a taxi.

While the Maya Chan Beach club is arguably the best Costa Maya beach you’ll set foot in, there are two other contenders that come rather close. Check them out:

Hayhu Beach

For a fancy beach experience, head on down to Hayhu beach. It’s a tranquil, eco-conscious oasis where tourists can relax and connect with nature. 

The place offers many excursion options, such as private beach breaks, all-inclusive packages, and snorkel boat tours. And after a long day of exploring, you can pick a dining spot where you’ll be guaranteed delicious food and excellent service.

Here’s a pro tip: Book a place at Hayhu beach early as there’s limited availability due to the beach being a highly popular tourist spot. 

Pez Quadro Beach

The Pez Quadro Beach Club is a fantastic destination for travellers looking to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean coast. There, you can book from a list of different activities, including:

Chacchoben and Dzibanche

Built over 1,300 years ago, these two incredible, ancient Mayan cities really are spectacular! They stand relatively close to the Caribbean cruise port, too, making it an easy trip.

While there are quite a few smaller sites nearby, Chacchoben and Dzibanche are the two largest and most interesting ones. If the only Mayan site you have seen is Tulum, near Cozumel, get ready for these ruins to take your breath away!

We’re happy to report also that both contain several pyramids, ball courts, and other ruins of these once-mighty cities. Additionally, many tours visit either a combination of cities or one city, as well as a butterfly farm and other interesting stops.

How to Get There

Get to Chacchoben and Dzibanche by either cruise line excursions or independently booked tours. Chacchoben is just under an hour from the pier, while Dzibanche is a little further afield – at two hours and 20 minutes.

And if you’re limited on time, Chacchoben is the better choice as the ruins there are more complete, and the closeness to the port makes it an easy trip. Make sure to bring along cash for any small purchases, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes.

Tulum

While Chacchoben and Dzibanche are much larger than Tulum and decidedly more impressive to view, the latter is perched along the sea, offering a more atmospheric location.

The main attraction in Tulum is the archaeological site of the same name. Those well-preserved ruins sit atop cliffs that overlook the Caribbean Sea. It’s quite the breathtaking site!

Interestingly, Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya people. Back in the day, it served as an important trading hub for them!

Nowadays, though, you’ll find tourists gathered around its impressive structures, such as the Temple of the Frescoes and El Castillo. We recommend considering a Tulum guided tour for insights into the architectural and astronomical knowledge of ancient Maya.

Bacalar Lagoon: Why Visit the Lake of Seven Colors

Saying Farewell to Carnival Ecstasy

Carnival Cruise Line announced in February 2022 that Carnival Ecstasy would leave the fleet after a 31-year run as one of the most popular and versatile vessels in the “Fun Ship” fleet.

Originally scheduled to be the first cruise ship to resume service from Jacksonville post-COVID, Carnival Ecstasy’s final voyage under the Carnival Cruise Line banner is on October 10, 2022 — a five-day sailing from Mobile, Alabama, to Cozumel and Progresso, Mexico. 

In addition to her manageable 70,000-ton size, short cruise itineraries and a wide array of venues made her the perfect venue for charters and special sailings such as the Carnival LIVE concert series.

But what made Carnival Ecstasy such a popular “Fun Ship” was her innovative interiors that changed how guests thought about cruising – once on board, they immediately knew this was no ordinary cruise ship.

Let’s take a look at what made Carnival Ecstasy so special. 

Carnival Ecstasy: The Encore to Carnival Fantasy

When Carnival Fantasy debuted to much fanfare in 1990, introducing some never-before-seen innovations, the obvious question would be, “What can you do for an encore?”

Enter Carnival Ecstasy, the second in the Fantasy class debuting in 1991, fast becoming a fan-favorite for her over-the-top Joe Farcus-designed interiors, including a real Rolls Royce positioned along the promenade.

In early 2022, the Rolls Royce was removed from Ecstasy and shipped to Carnival Celebration, where it will debut on the upcoming LNG-powered ship on November 6. 

Although not known at the time, six additional Fantasy-class ships would join Carnival Ecstasy and the namesake Carnival Fantasy to create the largest number of ships introduced from a single class — with eight Fantasy-class ships at one point plying the waters of the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and the West Coast.

Like her predecessor Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Ecstasy featured a wide variety of onboard features – a soaring seven-deck-high glass-enclosed atrium with an ever-changing expanse of changing lights, a 12,000-square-foot spa, a massive casino, acres of teak-planked decks highlighted by a 114-foot-long corkscrew water slide, and multiple dining areas, including an expansive poolside Lido restaurant.

But what really set Carnival Ecstasy apart was her unforgettable décor, a hallmark of world-renowned designer Joe Farcus, who employed the term “entertainment architecture” to describe his thought process in designing what some have proclaimed as “Las Vegas at sea.”

Living up to Farcus’ motto of “It’s no place like home,” his vivid imagination was on full display with memorable spaces like the clubby Explorers Club library featuring a massive globe and the aforementioned Rolls Royce Café featuring a 1934 Rolls-Royce Saloon that he found scouring the English countryside, as well as the Neon Bar, a veritable museum of vintage neon signs, a lounge inspired by a Chinatown street complete with red lanterns dangling with gold tassels and lion-headed sculptures, and the aptly named Stripes Disco, a monument to bold simplicity. 

Fun Facts about Carnival Ecstasy

• Carnival Ecstasy made headlines for all the wrong reasons in July 1998 when the aft of the ship caught fire as she was departing PortMiami, with extensive coverage across the globe, even in the pre-Internet era.
• Carnival Ecstasy’s godmother is Kathie Lee Gifford, who starred in the cruise industry’s first national TV campaign in the 1980s. This was Gifford’s second stint as godmother, serving in this role for the since-retired Celebration in 1987. 
• With the retirement of Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Ecstasy had the distinction of being the “most mature” ship in the Carnival fleet at 31 years. 
• Like other Fantasy-class ships, Carnival Ecstasy once had a topless deck typically used by European guests with prominent “No Cameras Allowed” signs displayed as guests ventured up the stairs.
• Carnival Ecstasy was initially constructed with a massive 10-ton interactive art sculpture called Double Helix that rose 24 feet in the ship’s atrium, rotating clockwise and counter-clockwise. It was replaced in the early 2000s with a raised lobby bar following the tremendous popularity of the first atrium lobby bar that debuted aboard Carnival Elation in 1998.

Carnival Ecstasy’s Upgrades Through the Years

Considering that Carnival Ecstasy joined the fleet in 1991, it should come as no surprise that she has seen her share of dry docks over the years, all part of Carnival’s efforts to modernize its fleet, equipping vessels with popular features like sprawling water parks that have become standard in the industry. 

Many of the company’s signature features were incorporated into the Fantasy class before making their debut – albeit on a grander scale – aboard newer, larger ships going forward. 

The ship’s most recent dry dock, which took place in 2019 at Grand Bahama shipyard in Freeport, added such popular features as Bonsai Sushi Express, the Warehouse video arcade, and the Dreams Studio, along with ongoing routine maintenance expected for a decades-old vessel.  

Another large-scale refurbishment took place in January 2017 when several poolside outlets, including Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina, were added, along with the popular Cherry on Top sweets shop and the cocktail pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar on Promenade Deck.  

Three years before that, two poolside watering holes, the RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar, were added as part of a major dry dock that also saw the upgrading of ClubO2 and a host of cosmetic enhancements. 

One of the ship’s largest renovation projects took place in 2009, part of the Evolutions of Fun enhancement program for the Fantasy class, which set the standard for other dry dock projects going forward and introduced several top-deck features that were expanded for other ships. 

These included a WaterWorks aqua park with a 300-foot-long water slide, dual racing slides, and a kiddie splash area.

Other new features were the first-ever Serenity adults-only retreats, a new resort-style pool highlighted by thatched huts and faux palm trees, new Circle “C” tween facilities, 98 new balconies added to existing oceanview staterooms, refurbished owners’ suites, new elevator lobbies and renovated public restrooms and two new dining options – Mongolian Wok and Rotisserie – within the Lido restaurant.

In 2006, the open-air City Sports Park featuring a mini-golf course, along with an expanded play area called Children’s World and a conference room (a groundbreaking concept at the time), were added as well.

Saying Goodbye to Carnival Ecstasy

Looking back over a 30-plus year run for any cruise ship is a trip through history, but Carnival Ecstasy was truly a groundbreaking ship, operating both shorter cruises and longer length voyages from a variety of North American homeports, including Charleston, Jacksonville, Miami, Port Canaveral, and Galveston, introducing Farcus’ vision of entertainment architecture to over 5.5 million cruise passengers across the globe.

Despite several dry docks that added a host of new features, in the end, Carnival Ecstasy’s demise was the result of newer, larger ships with more bells and whistles that consumers expect out a vacation.

In what is said to be a package deal to the scrapyard, Carnival Sensation was also retired from the fleet in early 2022, leaving just Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise, both of which entered service in 1998, as the remaining Fantasy-class ships — a somewhat sad commentary on the most successful series of ships ever introduced. 

They say all good things come to an end, and that is certainly the case with Carnival Ecstasy, which made an indelible mark on cruising, bringing a sense of fun and whimsy rarely seen in today’s mega-liners.
