Cruise Passenger Dead After Going Overboard Near Norway

A cruise ship passenger has died after going overboard during a Norway fjords cruise. In the early hours, a man overboard alert was triggered on MSC Euribia.

The ship was en route to the town of Flam, Norway. It happened in the Sognefjord, the largest fjord in Norway and the second-largest fjord in the world.

According to Vincent Roos of the Southern Norway Rescue Center, a helicopter, air ambulance, and several boats were deployed, some of which were nearby.

The operation was completed quickly, with rescuers locating the man within one hour. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital in Bergen.

The passenger hasn’t been publicly identified but is a foreign male in his late 50s traveling with his spouse.

The MSC Euribia arrived in Flam, where police were expected to interview crew members and any relevant passengers. Police will also view video surveillance footage.

Police Investigation Underway

Police Superintendent Kristoffer Jorddal Lønning said they will conduct a full investigation, including an autopsy. We have several hypotheses. It could be an accident, a criminal act, or an intentional act,” he told local media.

MSC Euribia is on a week-long cruise roundtrip from Kiel, Germany, with port calls, including Alesund, Norway. It is due to return to Kiel on Saturday.”

This is not the first man overboard incident on the ship this year. In March, a Scottish man went missing after going overboard as the ship sailed to Hamburg, Germany.

There have been other overboard incidents on MSC ships this year, including the death of an elderly American guest in Malta on the MSC World Europa in February as the vessel was docked at the port.
