Review: Carnival’s Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast

I’ve been a fan of Dr. Seuss ever since I was a little kid. I remember books like Oh, The Places You’ll Go, Cat in the Hat, and The Lorax. So when I saw a Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast offered on Carnival Horizon (like on their other ships), I made a dash for the guest relations desk to sign up. Some ships will have a sign-up table on Lido Deck during embarkation day.

The partnership with Seuss Enterprises was rolled out in 2013 with Bookville, a place for kids to read Dr. Seuss Books, The Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast, and most recently a Seuss-themed waterpark on the new Carnival Horizon.

Signing Up For the Character Breakfast

To sign up for the breakfast you simply make a reservation at guest relations. The cost is $5 per person and is typically held on the last sea day of every cruise. The price is a good deal when you compare it to other character breakfasts on other cruise lines that are normally $10 per person. On most sailings, the Dr. Seuss Breakfast is so popular that they have two seatings. On our Carnival Horizon sailing, we were assigned the second seating at 9:45 a.m. in the Reflection Dining Room. The breakfast day and times may vary by ship and itinerary.

Insider Tip: Sign up early, possibly even on embarkation day. We got the last spots when we went to sign up on the last sea day.

Entering the Main Dining Room

Before you enter the dining room, there’s a photo opportunity for kids to take a picture with a cutout of Thing 1 and Thing 2. And in true Suess style, the dining room was transformed to a scene out of The Cat in the Hat. There were red and blue themed tablecloths with polka dots across them, giant Cat in the Hat top hats with a cardboard cutout, and a big ice carving of the mysterious feline. The servers are also dressed with Suess flair.

Every party is seated individually at the breakfast, usually at their own table, but there is a chance you could be seated at a big round table, too. If you want to sit with just your family, you should tell the hostess before you’re seated.

Where you’re seated doesn’t impact the character experience and photo opportunity with each character. The will rotate each side of the dining room or call each side up for photos.

Insider Tip: On your way in, make sure you pick up a free autograph book so the characters can sign it. It’s a good keepsake from the breakfast. 

Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast Choices

For drink choices, they served the basics like coffee, Moose Juice (orange), or Goose Juice  (apple). There are also bar waiters available. They started everyone out with a choice of either a strawberry or kiwi parfait before taking breakfast orders.

Insider Tip: Don’t be shy to order more than one thing while at the breakfast. Think of it like the main dining room: if you want to throw on some extra side dishes, feel free to eat to your heart’s content. 

Dr. Seuss Breakfast Character Experience 

During the meal, three characters (well four this time technically!) will come out parading around the dining room and then stop to take photos. Unlike other photo opportunities around the ship, you could use your own camera when taking photos at the character breakfast. The characters that came out during our voyage were Sam I Am, Thing 1 and Thing 2, and Cat in the Hat.

Thing 1 and 2 both came tableside and took a photo by your table. Cat in the Hat and Sam I am did not come tableside. They called up each side of the dining room to form a single file line to take a photo with them. I would assume because how tall the cat’s hat is and how wide Sam is, that it’s safer to take the photos at the entrance to the main dining room. Some fun things happen when the characters enter the dining room, but I won’t spoil that! You also have a chance to purchase a professional made photo by one of the ship’s photographers. They will ask you for your cabin number before they take your picture. You are not obligated to purchase it.

Insider Tip: Because the characters have so many tables to visit in a short amount of time, you should have your camera ready to take the photo when it’s your turn. 

Final Thoughts of Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast

Overall I think the $5 per-guest charge for the Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham breakfast experience is well worth it. Don’t feel like you need to have a kid with you in order to attend. There’s a great atmosphere, selection of food, and excitement when all the characters come out. Watching the expression and excitement on the kid’s faces as the characters came out was worth the price alone.

Given that they did two seatings and both were sold out is telling enough about how popular the breakfast is. Plus, it’s good to change the food up if you’ve already experienced the other breakfast venues on the ship. And who doesn’t love the Cat in the Hat and friends!

Don’t let the green eggs fool you, they taste exactly like the regular thing!
